On this day, the 5’10” Scheer had a performance of the ages against Linn in the first round of the Southern Boone Classic. Scheer erupted for a career-high 52 points in the Eagles’ easy victory over Linn. The 52 points performance broke a school record that stood for more than 50 years.
Scheer scored 11 points in the first quarter, but he really turned up the heat in the second quarter when he scored 26 points to finish with 37 points at halftime. He was on fire from long distance as he made eight of his 10 3-pointers. Even after a spectacular performance, Scheer was very humble as he credited his teammates.
“It feels good to break the record, but I couldn’t have done it without my teammates,” he said. “They kept throwing the ball to me and I was able to throw it in the hole. That’s the way our team is. No one really cares who scores. We feed whoever has the hot hand. We have eight player who can score and that’s what makes us so effective.”
A talented combo guard, Scheer has been an excellent scorer throughout his career at Southern Boone, which has aided in a lot of winning in Ashland, Mo. He has received collegiate interest from Division III and NAIA schools. Fontbonne University in St. Louis is one Division III school that has been in constant contact.
Scheer is the team’s top scoring threat on a unit that is currently 18-1 and ranked No. 1 in the state in Class 3. He is currently averaging 16 points a game to lead a balanced scoring attack. He is an excellent 3-point shooter, but he is also able to attack the basket and score with his strong body and nice touch around the rim.
As a junior, Scheer averaged 15.8 points to lead the Eagles to a 23-2 record and a berth in the district championship game, which they lost to a powerful Father Tolton team led by Michael Porter and Jontay Porter. With the Porters having moved to Seattle, Scheer and his teammates have a favorable opportunity to advance through districts.
“Our goals are to win districts,” Scheer said. “We have a good shot to win districts this year. We just have to keep working hard.”
