Continue ReadingWith Sectional week coming up quick, we take a look ahead and preview some of the most balanced Sectionals in the state. We have taken the Sagarin Rating of all the teams in each Sectional and found the smallest gap between the best and the worst teams. These Sectionals look to be the most wide-open, fun Sectionals of the upcoming week and ones that we should be paying attention to. With that being said, here is our look at the most balanced Sectionals in each class.
1A Sectional 53 – North Vermillion
In 1A, Sectional 53 is the closest of all of them. The difference between the first and the last team is slim. This isn’t the best Sectional in 1A but is definitely wide open with Attica the only undefeated team against Sectional opponents at 3-0. Rockville, Riverton Parke, and Turkey Run have all been beating up on each other this season. Only North Vermillion is the odd man out with a 3-17 overall record and 0-6 record against Sectional opponents. All of the top four teams have between 7-11 wins. Nobody is pulling away and the back-and-forth in the win column could make this fun.
2A Sectional 45 – South Ripley
In 2A, the South Ripley Sectional is actually the closest Sectional in the state regardless of class. All the teams sit in the 242-294 range of the Sagarin Rankings and every team except North Decatur has 7 wins this season as it stands. Even so, North Decatur has been good this season and two of their losses have come in overtime. Switzerland County is the best rated team in the Sectional and they have a 3-1 record against Sectional opponents. However, Milan, South Ripley, and Southwestern all have 9 wins on the season and could be trouble.
3A Sectional 29 – Greensburg
In 3A, the Greensburg Sectional has always been one of the more balanced Sectionals in the state with a ton of recent success. Greensburg and Batesville have had their battles but Madison and Rushville were also heavily involved. Now, Lawrenceburg and Franklin County have stepped up and joined the two perennial favorites. Lawrenceburg actually has the best record in the Sectional at 15-5 but the top four teams all have 10 wins or more. South Dearborn, Madison, and Rushville are the clear bottom tier.
4A Sectional 7 – Lafayette Jefferson
In 4A, the Lafayette Jeff Sectional is going to be a heck of a good time. They are the second toughest Sectional in the state and the most balanced in 4A. Every team is in the Sagarin Top 100 and the top three are in the Top 40. McCutcheon just got done going to the State FInals last year and they might be a better team this season. However, they have Zionsville (15-5), Logansport (21-1), Kokomo (13-6), Lafayette Jeff (10-9), and Harrison (11-9) all waiting for them. While Sectional 10 might be the toughest, especially at the top end, this Sectional should be the most entertaining to watch because of how crazy it could be with “upsets.”
