Continue ReadingIn a battle that could come back around in March for Sectionals, Brebeuf Jesuit and Tri-West traded punches all night long. Brebeuf got out to an early lead and tried to hold off Tri-West. They got a break near the half as senior Peyton Hendershot left with a leg injury and never returned. However, that made Tri-West even more motivated and in the end, they were just able to squeeze by with a last second score to beat the Braves, 66-65.
MVP: Tyler Watson (Tri-West)
The best player all game was Rice but Watson made the key plays at the end to help Tri-West win. He had 22 points on 5/12 shooting. It wasn’t close to his best game as he made his first two three-pointers early in the game and the proceeded to miss his last five. However, it was his clutch free throw shooting that kept the score close. He was 10/11 from the free throw line. He’s a winner and knows how to just do enough to win the game, every game.
Best Offensive Performance: Malachi Rice (Brebeuf Jesuit)
Like we said before, Rice was the best player all game long, He was great at getting to the rim and the only time he really didn’t was on the last play of the game. Rice scored 24 points on 9/11 shooting. He was consistent from start to finish and was the guy that Brebeuf went to on nearly every play. A few other guys stepped up but really it was Malachi’s aggressive driving that put Brebeuf out in the lead early.
Best Defensive Performance: Kobe McNeal (Brebeuf Jesuit)
This was a great game for McNeal. The 5’11 guard isn’t a big time scorer but came through with 11 points and grabbed four key rebounds. He also had a ton of steals and always seemed to be the guy leading the charge back down the floor for some easy points. He was active and involved in so many plays. This is what Kobe can be at his best and it was good to see.
Best Guy Off The Bench: Max Kucer (Brebeuf Jesuit)
Kucer was easily the best guy off the bench and was also the most under-the-radar performance of the game. He came in and was ready from the start as he was looking to shoot the ball. He had three straight scores where Max dribbled in from the top of the key and hit a pull-up jumper. One was a three but the other two were from around the free throw line. Kucer finished with 7 points and a pair of rebounds and went 3/4 from the field, a perfect line for a bench player.
Best Underclassmen: Ryan Wiggins (Tri-West)
Wiggins had the best performance from an underclassmen in this one. The 6’7 forward is one of the better shooters in the 2019 class and hit a pair of long jumpers where he kind of had to create a little breathing room to get them off. He only had four points but the two scores were really impressive and is honestly a little surprising that he isn’t getting more time on the floor for Tri-West down the stretch.
