Continue ReadingOn Sunday, the IHSAA had their Sectional Draw for the upcoming State Tournament. Now, it is time to dive into each Sectional in the state. We continue on with our look at each in our Regional breakdown.
Sectional 9: New Castle (Host): Connersville, Greenfield-Central, Mt. Vernon (Fortville), New Castle, Pendleton Heights, Richmond.
Breakdown: In Sectional 9, we have one of the more under-the-radar teams in the state in Connersville who is 23-1 on the season. They look like the team to beat in the Sectional but they drew Mt. Vernon-Fortville first. That will be a tough game as the last time these two teams play it went into four overtimes. On the other side of the bracket, Pendleton Heights will be a tough out and would face New Castle in the semifinals if they get past Greenfield-Central in the first round. Whoever comes out of that at the easiest would have to face Mt. Vernon, at worst Connersville.
Sectional 10: North Central (Indianapolis) (Host): Indianapolis Arsenal Technical, Indianapolis Cathedral, Lawrence Central, Lawrence North, North Central (Indianapolis), Warren Central.
Breakdown: In Sectional 10, you have the toughest Sectional in the entire state. North Central, Lawrence North, and Warren Central have all had great seasons and any of them are capable winners. The draw has put North Central in the best position as they would only have to beat Lawrence Central and Cathedral to get to the Sectional Championship. Warren Central and Lawrence North are paired up in the first game of the Sectional and that could be one of the best games in the state on Tuesday. Warren forced Lawrence North twice to play out of their style to beat them earlier in the season. Look for it to be a Warren Central vs. North Central rematch on Saturday. They split the two meetings this season already.
Sectional 11: Decatur Central (Host): Ben Davis, Decatur Central, Perry Meridian, Pike, Roncalli, Southport.
Breakdown: In Sectional 11, you got a very lopsided draw as the two best teams in the Sectional will get to play each other in the first game of the Sectional. Ben Davis and Indianapolis Pike will play each other on Tuesday night and last time out, Ben Davis blew them out, 68-41. However, Pike always plays well come March and they aren’t a team you want to sleep on. On the other side of the bracket, Roncalli will be without Christian Stewart but they should still be able to make it through Perry Meridian and Southport to challenge likely winner, Ben Davis, in the Championship game.
Sectional 12: Plainfield (Host): Avon, Brownsburg, Mooresville, Plainfield, Terre Haute North Vigo, Terre Haute South Vigo.
Breakdown: In Sectional 12, you have a lot of teams that are better than they were at the beginning of the year. Terre Haute South looks like the team to beat but they have really grown up over the course of the season and are going to be a really tough out for Avon in the first round. Avon as well has played above expectations but that is a tough draw. On the opposite side of the bracket, Brownsburg has been flying under the radar to a 15-6 record and are plenty capable of knocking off a solid Terre Haute North team in the first round. The most intriguing matchup is the potential semifinal game between Plainfield and Brownsburg. They just played on 2/14 and Brownsburg won 62-44. However, that isn’t an outcome that was expected as Plainfield has been one of the best teams in the area. Either team could win and meet up with South in the Championship but Terre Haute South does look like the best team.
