Continue ReadingThe game was at a distance for most of the game for Brownsburg but a key three in the fourth quarter gave Brownsburg their first lead and in it until the end but then a Peyton Hendershot finish at the rim took the lead back for the last time in the final few seconds for Tri-West and they held on to win 57-56 in the first round of the Hendricks County Tournament.
MVP: Tyler Watson (Tri-West)
This was a great game from Watson who scored 21 points on 9/14 shooting. He was very efficient and was as calm and cool throughout the game as one. Most players were playing one good half, one bad but it was Watson’s performance from start to finish that really stood out as the thing that put Tri-West ahead early and in position to win at the end.
Play of the Game: Peyton Hendershot (Tri-West)
This was one of the worst games we had seen from Hendershot all season but he came up big at then end getting an inbounds pass at the free throw line and a hard drive to the low block to finish with the and-one opportunity. He then missed the free throw with 1.4 seconds left and Brownsburg only had a hail mary chance that didn’t make it down the floor.
Play of the Game Before The Play Of The Game: Packard Rozzi (Brownsburg)
It seems very easy in terms of the complexity of the play, it was just a counter attack from Brownsburg off a made Tyler Watson bucket but it was the timing and how Brownsburg got to that spot to take the lead on a Packard Rozzi three that stands out. Brownsburg had been down as many as 10 and had finally cut the lead to 4 as the fourth quarter started. They had tied it the last time down but the Rozzi three took the lead for the first time in the game.
Best Offensive Performance: Cameron Alford (Brownsburg)
The best offensive performance of the game was that of Alford. He was doing a little bit of everything in this one. He really had his shot working early and kept Brownsburg within single digits to make their late run. He scored 25 points on 8/17 shooting, 4/6 from three. His driving was improved from the last time we saw him as he was being more deceptive and working in and out of the paint trying to drive. He’s the only reason that Brownsburg was even close as the next best scorer was Packard Rozzi with 11 points.
Best Defensive Performance: Landon Hall (Brownsburg)
Hall didn’t provide much on the offensive side but he was able to really limit Peyton Hendershot and negate what he brings to the table in terms of offense, rebounding, and athleticism. It allowed Brownsburg to stay in the game early and matched up Brownsburg best on defense, hoping to keep it a lower scoring game. He’s a pretty versatile player and with his size and athleticism, he showed he could stay with Peyton all night if they needed him to.
Best Guy Off The Bench: Ryan Wiggins (Tri-West)
Not a ton of guys contributed off the bench but Wiggins showed a little bit of what he could do. He’s a big, strong post guy but one that can stretch the floor. He hit a three midway through the game. It helped extend the lead a bit and gave Tri-West some comfort heading into half. He’s going to be a big part of the future of this team and you got to see a little bit of that.
Best Intangibles: Jake Hill (Tri-West)
Hill is that jack-of-all-trades from Tri-West. He gives them a big wing that can play inside and out as well as defense. He did a good job helping down low on Baker and Hall as they were trying to pick up the pace down in the fourth quarter. He also scored 14 points and grabbed four rebounds, hitting both of his three-point attempts. He’s such a solid versatile scoring threat.
Best Under-The-Radar Performance: Antrez Baker (Brownsburg)
The best performance that kind of went unnoticed was Baker. He’s probably more of a football player long term but offensively, he gives Brownsburg a big that can post up and score with his body on the low block. He’s also showing to be an improved defensive player that was pretty good as a rim-protector of sorts against Tri-West drives.
Best Underclassmen: Reis Thomas (Brownsburg)
Thomas is a really talented player with has a body that isn’t close to a finished product. He’s likely to grow a few more inches and even out, giving him a tall wing as his profile because he can really shoot the ball and do quite a bit off the bounce as well. He’s going to be a load as he gets a little more athletic and a little taller. He’s actually so far away of where he could be that he’s hard to project but we know he will be good when it is all said and done.
Biggest Takeway: The biggest takeaway of the game was how much better Brownsburg is going to be in the coming years. Without Landon Hall, they will struggle replacing his versatility but Steve Lynch has a ton of options with Antrez Baker, Kyle Wolf, Reis Thomas, and Cameron Alford. They also had a few deep bench guys that didn’t get in but overall, this group has enough talent that just needs time. Could be really good in two years.
