Two Springfield schools battled it out in a hard-fought game on
Tuesday night which saw Glendale come out on top. Here are the Elite
Eight from the game.
MVP: Jordan Walton (Glendale) – The 2018 guard put on a show last
night. Walton finished with 34 points before fouling out late in the
fourth quarter. He does a great job of finishing around the basket in
transition and has a great mid-range jumper as well. He did a really
nice job of creating the offense for himself and getting others
involved as well.
Best Offensive Performance: Tyem Freeman (Hillcrest) – The 2019
forward had himself quite the game. Freeman finished with a game-high
37 points, but what impressed me the most might have been his vision
and passing ability he has for a big man. Freeman has quite a few post
moves and plays the above the rim very well. Had a couple nice dunks
last night, and will be a name to remember for the next couple of
years.
Best Defensive Performance: Honestly it’s tough to give out a
defensive award in a game that saw a combined 233 points scored.
Best Shooter: Jaxon Davis (Glendale) and Cole Pryor (Hillcrest) –
These two were huge x-factors during the game. Davis fits in perfectly
in the Glendale offense because he can spot up in the corners and be
ready to shoot when Walton or Monty Johal need someone to hit the open
3-pointer. Davis made six 3-pointers and finished with 21 points.
Pryor hit timely shots for the Hornets all night last night and
finished with 25 points.
Best Rebounder: Tim Washington (Hillcrest) – Washington is a freak
athlete. He does an amazing job of reading the ball off the rim and
always seems to be in the right place at the right time. The 2018
guard came up with huge offensive rebounds when Hillcrest needed them
most last night to give them extra possessions which eventually led to
points in order to get them to overtime.
Best Underclassman: Tyem Freeman (Hillcrest) – See above.
Name to Remember: Monty Johal (Glendale) – It would be tough to write
a 10 best article without mentioning Johal. The 2018 guard is a
pleasure to watch. His crossover reminds me of a Jamal Crawford
crossover, and boy does he make people look silly with it. He has the
ability to finish in transition, and can step out and shoot the
outside shot, but prefers the 12-15 foot jumper. Johal finished with
29 points last night including 12-13 from the free throw line.
Best Passer: Garrett Freeman (Glendale) – The 2017 guard had a couple
of nice assists last night. He does a great job of taking care of the
ball for the Falcons and knows his role which makes him very valuable
to this Glendale team.
