Republic 2017 G Treydon Rackley continues to be one of the best hidden gems in Southwest Missouri this season.
The 6’2 senior is producing on both ends of the floor, leading the Tigers in points, rebounds, steals and blocks while shooting a cool 54% from the field.
His entire repertoire was on full display earlier this month in the 33rd Bass Pro Tournament of Champions, where Rackley helped Republic hang with nationally-ranked Sierra Canyon, before losses to Madison Prep (La.) and Kickapoo by a combined seven points.
Rackley scored 13 points against Sierra Canyon and dropped 17 on Kickapoo, shooting a combined 10-for-18 from the field. Most impressively he also held Navy signee Cam Davis to just 10 points in 32 minutes. Davis entered the tournament averaging more than 18 PPG.
A basketball junkie, playing in the prestigious Tournament of Champions was the moment of a lifetime for Rackley. One that he also believes will pay dividends for himself and his team moving forward.
“It was amazing; probably the best basketball experience I’ve had in my whole life,” said Rackley. “To be able to play out here with some guys we’ll see in the NBA one day is amazing. We won’t be playing people of this caliber for the rest of the season, but to be able to score against and defend some of these guys just proves that it’s something you can do against anyone else.
“This should give the entire team a ton of confidence, knowing that we can compete with the best of the best in high school basketball.”
Republic followed up its strong TOC showing with a dominant 62-20 win over McDonald County last Thursday, the seventh time this season the Tigers held an opponent to 40 points or fewer. Rackley scored a game-high 15 points in that game.
Republic is 12-5 with all five losses coming to teams that are state and/or nationally ranked, earning them the No. 10 spot in the latest Class 5 MOBCA state poll.
The final six weeks of the season get no easier with COC-Large play being preceded with a trip to Columbia to take on Father Tolton Catholic. Tolton has one of Missouri’s top scorers in combo guard Isaiah Wilson. Rackley will likely receive the task of slowing Wilson as the Tigers look to prepare for yet another playoff push.
While Rackley’s future remains in question – several NAIAs, JUCOs and D2/D3 programs have shown interest – he remains focused on helping Republic win games with no imminent timetable for making a decision.
However, his coach – former Missouri State guard Trevyor Fisher – wasn’t shy in stating what he thinks Rackley will bring to the table for a college program regardless of level.
“He’s going to be an incredible worker; he’s a gym rat,” said Fisher. “He cares about playing the game and has a high IQ. He continues to work on his shot and his game and the sky’s the limit for him. In his time at Republic he’s done everything we’ve asked of him. He just needs someone to give him an opportunity.”
