We spent the whole week covering the SAC Tournament at Wayne High School and some senior really put on a show. Here are some of the top 2018 performers from the week:
Arius Jones: Arius Jones has been working on his finishing around the basket because he was great against Luers. Jones is known for his defensive prowess and court awareness and he didn’t disappoint. It’s obvious that he has been working on his jumper but it still needs some work as he’s still not confident enough to bring the defender out closer. His quickness and ball handling allow him to get to the rim at ease.
Jared Hofer: Hofer looked good in their opening round loss to Bishop Luers. The 6’9” forward had a double-double at the end of the third quarter. Jared has been working on his finishing and moves around the basket. His jump shot looked good as he was consistent from 15-feet. Hofer still needs to work on his foot work moving forward but it was apparent that he had been working on his conditioning and positioning.
Sam Buck: Sam Buck was an unsung hero for Homestead. The junior continually knocked down open shots when given the opportunity and was helpful on the glass as well. He is not overly confident going to the basket yet or handling the ball out top. Buck needs to work on his quickness, strength, and rebounding ability moving forward but was big for Homestead last week.
Brandan Johnson: Brandan Johnson struggled early in the tournament getting into any flow on the offensive end but put together a good performance in the Championship game. Johnson has made improvements on his jump shot as he looks more comfortable shooting the ball and looks for it more often. His slashing ability was impressive and he finished well around the basket. Will need to work on ball handling and his jumper a little more moving forward.
Cortney Shorter: Shorter has been putting work in on his jump shot and it showed in their game against Northrop. Shorter was good from deep and mid-range. He also showed off his athleticism with the one-handed flush on the break. Shorter has also been working on his ball handling ability as he’s become a better guard and passer. Shorter will need to improve on his rebounding and strength moving forward for South Side.
Demarque Perkins: Demarque Perkins is one of those under-the-radar guys but put together a good performance at the SAC Tournament. Perkins finishes well at the basket with his length and athleticism but needs to work on his ball handling and jump shot moving forward. He rebounds the ball well for a guard and does the little things for the Archers to give them a fighting chance. His effort and tenacity really help add energy to this team.
Trejean Didier: Trejean did exactly what he’s known for. Didier was on fire from long range, hitting shots from in front of the bench to behind the volleyball line. He can really stretch the floor with his shooting and showed that he had been working on scoring off the dribble as well. Trejean will need to work on his rebounding and defensive footwork. He seems to be a step slow when he guards athletic wings. Didier will be the leading scorer for South Side this season but will need to make his game more well-rounded.
Darien Causey: Causey was great for the Generals last week. The junior guard stepped up with some good offensive performances. He showed his ability to shoot the ball from deep as well as finish in the paint against size. Cause will need to continue improving on his ball handling and passing ability as he has the ball in his hands quite a bit for this team. Causey is a good defender but needs to be more of a presence on the defensive glass.
