Both team were pretty evenly match and it played out that way as the Huskies came away with a hard-fought 63-62 victory. The Huskies had to survive a couple of last-second jumpers by Northwest to escape with the narrow victory.
Now, it’s on to the best of the day:
MVP: Robyion Hughes (Ritenour) – The 5’8″ 2017 point guard scored a game-high 21 points to lead the Huskies. He is a dynamic performer in the open court with blow-by quickness and long distance shooting range. With the score tied at halftime, Hughes scored eight consecutive points to help stake the Huskies to an early 10-point lead in the second half.
Best Offensive Player: Robyion Hughes (Ritenour) – Hughes put on an impressive offensive display in scoring his 21 points. He knocked down 3-pointers, he scored in transition and he was able to speed past defenders to get to the basket and score in the paint. He was excellent in the open court as he was able to drop several dimes to open teammates in transition.
Best Rebounder: Jamarr Williams (Northwest) – The 6’6″ 2018 power forward is a rebounding machine on both ends of the floor. He grabbed a game-high 11 boards in the game. His game is strictly meat and potatoes. He scores inside and rebounds the ball. Not fancy, but very effective.
Best Shooter: Robyion Hughes (Ritenour) – Hughes knocked down four 3-pointers en route to a game-high 21 points. He made a couple off the catch and a couple of deep ones off the dribble.
Best Matchup: (Jamarr Williams vs. Nick Williams) – Watching these two lost post 2018 forwards go at it was the highlight of the game. They couldn’t be more different as Jamarr is a long and lanky 6’6″ while the robust Nick is 6’7″ and about 240-pounds. Jamarr Williams finished the game with 20 points and 11 rebounds while Nick Williams finished with 16 points and eight rebounds.
Best Young Prospect (2019, 2020): Darrell Bolden (Ritenour): A very athletic 6’2″ 2019 wing player who displayed some good things in limited minutes. He showed some nice explosiveness on a baseline drive and also on a coast to coast foray to the hoop for a bucket.
Best Athlete: Wilshon Warren (Northwest): One of the most explosive athletes in the city, Warren entertained the crowd with three very impressive transition dunks. And he made all of them look easy. He also knocked down a couple of 3-pointers en route to scoring 19 points.
The One Disappointment: Northwest Academy was without the services of standout 2017 point guard Ryan Warren, who was slowed by an ankle injury and played very limited minutes. The 5’7″ Warren is averaging 20 points a game. I really missed watching Warren and Hughes of Ritenour go at it in a battle of excellent small guards. That would have been fun to see.
