“We beat Shanley last night in overtime 88-82,” Fargo North Coach Ted Critchley said a day after a big win that put his team at 6-1 on the year.
“Siman Sem led with 45 points and 21 rebounds, six assists, and four steals with North Dakota State University assistant Jayden Olson in attendance. Siman had 29 in the second half while going 17 of 19 from the free throw line.
“Senior guard Anders Kjar hit a three point basket at buzzer to complete 14 point second half deficit and put the game into overtime. It was a big win.”
North Dakota State was the school Siman had committed to a year ago before a parting of the ways. Sem saw NDSU staff at his games in Las Vegas this summer and they of course have watched him again this winter as well.
As one of the best players in the state, what will he do next year at the college level? That’s to be determined. Right now the 6-foot-4 guard is wide open and just focused on finishing this year strong.
“Siman has a wide variety of teams that have shown interest; yet it is too early to determine where Siman may be playing,” Critchley said. “Many schools are starting to contact Siman or even myself at this point, but Siman and I are waiting for those interests to become offers before those schools are officially disclosed.
“I do know wherever he goes that a team will definitely get a talented student-athlete who just seems to be getting better and better each and every week of this early basketball season.”
Sem has his coach very excited about what is to come. Siman has really matured in the last several months.
“I don’t know if I have ever seen such a transformation in a player from one year to the next,” Sem said. “The school issue is really up in the air right now as Siman is really just concentrating on the season and doing everything in his power to bring our program to a higher level.
“He’s a great student as well who is consistently on the honor roll. Every year since I have been here (Junior/Senior).
“Siman has always been a good leader but the maturation of his game and how he approaches practice from a competitive standpoint is what seems to be the most growth in regards to his junior season.
“He is our hardest working player at practice where he absolutely just hates to lose at anything which could be a loose ball drill, shooting drill, or team competitive drill.
“Therefore his leadership by example shows hard work and when you are getting that from your most talented player then other guys are more willing to compete as well. Therefore he really sets the tone in regards to the attitudes of competitiveness and toughness.
“Siman is vocal in a positive fashion. He communicates with his teammates and when even out of the game he communicates to those who are on the floor. He is constantly striving to make his teammates better by pushing them not just physically but encouraging them to take the next step and be mentally involved in the process.
“His physical skills speak for themselves but his mental and emotional approach to the game is well ahead of the normal curve for a high school athlete. I think these two things combined make him a special player which makes us a much more competitive if not successful team.”
Siman is averaging 26.3 points, 9.8 rebounds, 4.6 assists, three steals, and a block a game. Sem is shooting 46 percent from the floor, 82 percent from the line, and 32 percent at the arc.
Siman is doing everything that he possibly can to make this team be successful,” Coach Critchley said. “These statistics are even higher than they were a year ago when he was a first team all-state selection. Most recently, Siman became a member of the 1,000 point club when he netted his achieving points on Friday during the Valley City game.”
