Fresh off a 14 point game against Tampa Prep on Wednesday, the 6’4″, 170-pound senior now has 1,246 points in his high school career. The school record is 1,421. James also owns program records for most points in a game (43) and in a season (461).
Currently averaging 21.4 points and 4.0 rebounds per game, the three-year starter and four-year varsity contributor has helped Bishop McLaughlin get off to a nice 8-5 start.
“This season I would say is definitely the best team our school has ever had,” James said. “In the past, our school would go into some games knowing we had no chance to compete but this year there isn’t a team we play that we know we can’t beat.”
Here’s how James breaks down his own game.
“I’d say my game includes a lot of offense,” he said. “Every game I draw the other teams best defender and in most games they try to deny me the ball full court. I attack the basket hard and get to the free throw line a lot but I also can shoot from several feet behind the 3-point line.”
He’s aiming to work on his strength so he can defend rebound against the bigger guys. James says he’s improved his ability to see the floor and find open teammates.
This summer, James focused on his weight training with new coach James Mason, a former basketball trainer.
He has several offers including from Division-III Piedmont. His coach talks regularly with a couple of Division-II programs.
James is used to being the main guy on the court. At the next level, the pressure will come off his shoulders a bit and he can start to really settle in. I expect him to really flourish at either Division-II or III. He has proven that he belongs time and time again.
