Continue ReadingLEBANON — Lebanon 6’1 2020 guard Quenton Shelton is among the state’s top scoring freshmen and is quickly earning a reputation as one of the premier 3-point shooters in southwest Missouri.
Through the first eight games of the season, Shelton was averaging 18.9 points per game and shooting 45 percent from behind the 3-point arc. Numbers that are even more impressive considering many of the 3-pointers he attempted were from NBA range.
“I like to shoot from anywhere and get out in transition and also force turnovers on the defensive end,” Shelton said.
Shelton spent the offseason playing for the Arkansas Wings 14U which competed in tournaments across the country and helped him prepare for the move to the varsity level.
“My summer consisted of a lot of traveling I focused on getting better at defense and learning to play against better teams to prepare for my high school season,” he said.
Lebanon is off to a 7-7 start and has already suprassed its win total from a year ago. The ‘Jackets won a thrilling contest on Friday over Sedalia Smith-Cotton in which Shelton hit a 3 to tie the game in the late stages.
“My team this season likes to get out and run so it fits my play style well and our team works well together and individually I like what we do as a team,” he said.
Shelton said he enjoys playing with senior Junior Torres, a transfer from Springfield Central.
“Torres is the player I look forward to play with the most and because he never gives on a play and always looks to help others and he is just a good solid player,” Shelton said.
Shelton says his dad has been the biggest influence on his basketball career has been his dad, who served as his coach as a youngster growing up.
“He has always guided me to the right direction,” Shelton said.
A fan of Norman North 2017 guard Trae Young, Shelton says he appreciates how had the standout guard competes.
“He is someone I like to watch because of how hard he plays and gives us a lot of highlights to get hyped about,” Shelton said.
Although he does not yet hold any offers, Shelton said he’s had several college coaches contact him already and has attended games and practices.
“I’m glad I may have the opportunity to play at a higher level,” he said.
