KANSAS CITY — Lee’s Summit North 2019 Javaunte Hawkins hasn’t gotten a lot of hype just yet, but he is emerging as one of the Kansas City area’s top young scoring guards.
At 5’10, Hawkins isn’t the biggest, but he is a scoring guard that can score at every level, has smooth handles and a competitive spirit.
He spent the offseason playing with the Kansas City Spurs and recently made the decision to play for Team Rush next summer. He said he focused a lot on improving his pull-up jumper and handle and said both aspects of his game have come a long way.
This season, Lee’s Summit North started slow despite fielding a talented squad, but have lost several close games while playing a tough schedule.
“I think we have the potential to be good, but we gotta fix some things like defense mainly,” Hawkins said. “I think I’ve taken the role of being our reliable player and becoming a leader because of my consistency this season.”
Hawkins and 6’8 2018 forward Elijah Farr have proven to be a tough 1-2 punch this season and are among the top inside-outside combinations in the Kansas City area.
“I look forward to playing with Elijah the rest of the season and next because we have so much chemistry and our pick and roll is sometimes unstoppable,” Hawkins said.
A fan of Steph Curry, Hawkins says his older brother Justin has been the biggest influence on his basketball career.
“He’s at every single game and tells me exactly what I did wrong and what I need I work on,” Hawkins said. “He’s my support system and biggest critic.
“I like Curry’s because his game is based off shooting, which is similar to mine. He can score in so many ways and I definitely use some of his moves when I play.”
Hawkins does not yet have an offer, but has already heard from a wide variety of schools, including Washburn, Northwest Missouri State, Central Michigan and Rockhurst.
