There were several talented underclassmen on these four teams. Here is a look at the top 2018 and 2019 standouts at Hermann.
2018
Caleb Strauss 6’8″ Warrenton: A long, lanky lefty who scored 14 points in the semifinals against Montgomery County. Strauss is pretty imposing with his size and length on the defensive end. He is more of a finesse player on the offensive end. He scores in the post, but he’s very comfortable stepping out and knocking down 15 footers. Strauss nailed a nice pull up 3-pointer at the third-quarter buzzer. Probably the top collegiate prospect in the tournament.
Aubrey Nelson 5’8″ Montgomery County: The small combo guard was held to only one point in the first half, but he erupted for 20 points in the second half and overtime session. Nelson knows how to get buckets. He has some nice escape moves off the dribbles and he can find the basket at different angles on the drive. He also displayed a stop and pop game, which included a pull-up 3-pointer. Hard to defend.
Ryan Harlan 5’10” St. James: A smooth lefty who scored 16 points in the overtime victory over host Hermann. He was the team’s primary ball handler, but he can get buckets with his ability to attack the basket off the dribble. Scored on several nice drives with a nice touch off the glass. Plays pretty steady without getting into too much of a hurry.
Randy McRoberts 5’10” Warrenton – Steady guard who scored 12 points the overtime victory over Montgomery County. He may go unnoticed at times, but he plays a very solid game with a calming influence out there on the court. He doesn’t make a lot of mistakes. He did a nice job of finding openings and finishing on his drives to the basket.
Chris Harrison 5’11” Montgomery County: Young guard who comes off the bench and plays with a lot of confidence. Scored 11 points, which included a driving layup as time expired in regulation to send the game into overtime. He’s more of a slasher with nice handles and good athleticism.
2019
Jake Tonioli 5’10” Warrenton- A talented marksman who scored a game-high 24 points in the overtime victory over Montgomery County. Tonioli was money from long distance as he knocked down seven 3-pointers, including five in the first half. If defenses sag in too much of Warrenton’s bigs inside, he is the one who makes them pay with his perimeter shooting.
