Three Up
Sturgis Brown (2-0). If honesty is involved when talking about the Scoopers, very few people expected a win over Aberdeen Central and Belle Fourche to state the year. Even fewer expected this team to be blowing a team out. Top 250 Expo standout Connor Crane (6-foot-5 junior forward) has had some big moments already including the clutch three that was the game winner against Central and then in foul trouble he still had four blocks and four scores in the Belle Fourche blowout win. Six foot junior guard Dawson Gueke had 21 in the recent win.
Redfield/Doland (3-0). It’s not so much the record as much as it is the way the Pheasants have outplayed Webster Area, Hitchcock-Tulare, and Wessington Springs. All wins have been by double figures and that’s by a combined 58 points. Redfield/Doland has Groland Area next who is also undefeated so that will say a lot about what the Pheasants can be. Six-foot junior guard Dalton Howe is off to a great start so far highlighted by the 22 points he had at Wessington Springs. Six-foot-2 senior Alan Masat has played all over the court pushing him to a couple double figure games.
Florence/Henry (2-0). The Falcons have hard fought wins over Great Plains Lutheran (56-51) and Waverly-South Shore (55-49). Five-foot-11 senior guard Kory Lane scored nine times in the win over GPL and 6-foot-5 junior big Nathan Hulscher had 13 rebounds. Lane had another 19 to beat the Coyotes and 6-foot-4 big Scott Olson hit double figures for the second straight game putting up 16 points with eight boards. Olson and Hulscher are a tough duo up front. They combine toughness and reasonable size which is something most teams can’t match in the ECC.
Three Down
SF Roosevelt (0-2). It was tough for the Rough Riders to lose to a Lincoln team that once again has a line-up that is nearly brand new but even tougher to get doubled up by Washington 67-33. They have five days to get ready for a Brandon Valley squad that nearly beat O’Gorman and has taken out Huron already. Alex Feigen will keep them in games and there is a new coaching staff so patience must be there.
West Central (0-3). Having Noah Vettrus didn’t get West Central a huge number of wins but it did allow them to be competitive, to win some games, and to entertain. The Trojans have played a tough schedule with Dell rapids and Sioux Falls Christian but those were 30 plus point blowouts and then they lost to Mt. Vernon/Plankinton by 21. Very tough start to the season.
Rapid City Central (0-3). The Cobblers will be happy to play South Dakota competition starting tomorrow against Mitchell who is a winnable opponent. They were in Gillette, Wyoming last weekend for three games and all three of those games (two against Wyoming teams, one against Nebraska) were losses. The Cobblers played good teams (the Nebraska team is 6-0) but they lost two close games and one competitive game. Now they have Mitchell, Huron, Douglas, and Dickinson (who had 2 D1 signed players) next up so they need to get at least two wins out of that.
