Minot. The more things change, the more…. You’ve all heard it. I’m guessing many of you are sick if of it. If people want to stop hearing about the Magic of Minot than somebody has to step up and beat them. Minot beat Century in overtime highlighted by a KyJuan Johnson memorable buzzer beating score in regulation. So far Justin Engg has been consistent and leading the team in point production. When will Minot final lose? I’m starting to feel like they could go undefeated in the regular season, or at least undefeated until the final week of January.
Bismarck Legacy. Saber basketball has been great in North Dakota beating Mandan by nine and St. Mary’s by 11. Good thing North Dakota is going well because Legacy had trouble in close games in Wyoming to start the year. Expect the Sabers to continue this run against Jamestown and Turtle Mountain before breaking in the new year with Century. Austin Wolf, Devin Beck, and Jason Hoekstra are the leaders for Legacy this year.
Berthold. The Bombers won the Stanley Lions Tournament Championship recently with a 76-68 win over the host squad. Garrett Hanson scored a game high 27 points in beating Wyatt Hanson and company on their own court. Alex Nelson scored 17 in support as the Lewis & Clark Bombers are once again a team that people need to take seriously. They also beat Divide County and Power Lake. Should they be ranked? Maybe. The next two games are against Dickinson Trinity and Parshall so they can really prove if they should be ranked or not.
Three Down
Mandan. The Braves are looking for that breakthrough but they missed their chance against Legacy and Dickinson by nine points each game. What’s worse is they have Bismarck Century next followed by Melrose from Minnesota who recently won a state title and is a top five team in Minnesota’s second smallest class of hoops. A start of 0-4 is possible but don’t be surprised if Mandan gets going after that when things get a tad easier in the following weeks.
Central Cass. A year ago the Squirrels were 16-6. It was a good group of seniors leading the way. Expectations were a little bit unsure at first but Central Cass beat Ellendale so everybody was excited again. Since then the tough schedule has led to a 14 point loss at Thompson, a one score painful loss to Grafton/St. Thomas, and a 13 loss on the road at Kindred. Two more road games are coming up at Richland, and Wyndmere/Lindgerwood so it’s a chance for 3-3 but almost necessary to be 3-3 after a 1-3 start.
Hazen. The Bison are right there as they lost games to TLMM by three scores and Garrison by three points. The team is under the spotlight because of course Wyatt Carr is their top guy but there is pressure on him, and on his teammates to step up and help Wyatt make a run. TLMM and Garrison look like good teams so close losses aren’t the end of the world but tough games are on the horizon so the Bison don’t have much time to figure out how to turn these close Ls into some Ws.
