Continue ReadingShiloh Christian and Bottineau were in a first half four point battle in last night’s Mandan Holiday Tournament semi-final. Moments later, they weren’t! The Skyhawks moved to the title game with a 73-41 win over Bottineau.
The next opponent will be TLMM who held on to beat Hettinger-Scranton 61-59. Tanner Jacobs exploded in the first half making his first five three pointers and then rode that momentum to a 24 point game (hit 6 of 9 from the arc).
TLMM needed every score from Tanner too as Isaiah Kludt had another all around game with 14 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals continuing an excellent tournament for him.
Shiloh Christian outscored their opponent 42-14 in the second half to explode their way to the title game. Bartholomew Ogbu totaled 20 points and 5 boards while Macauley Young recorded a double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds.
MVP: Bartholomew Ogbu. Physically nobody could do anything with Ogbu yesterday. The 6-foot-6 junior forward set the tone with a transition dunk early in the game and then had a perfect shooting performance in half two. There was a rip through baseline dunk, a face-up 15 foot jumper make, a two hand jam on the baseline, a pull-up three and a trail three. Scored his 20 in many ways.
Best Offensive Performance: Trapper Jacobs. His first half shooting explosion of five three-pointers was on the same level of “memorable impact” as Ogbu’s throw downs. But the Jacobs threes were worth 15 points early and kept his team just ahead all game. He also had six boards for his team. Jacobs came into the event averaging 29 points a contest.
Best Defensive Performance: Isaiah Kludt. In the first game of this event Isaiah looked like a Mark Toe like ball pressure defender. Saw some of that last night too. When Mark graduates the 5-foot-7 Kludt may move into that top guy role. Not to mention he had 22 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, and 7 steals in the first round followed by 14 points, 6 boards, 4 assists, and 3 steals last night.
Best Under the Radar Performance: Bryce Haerer, junior Bottineau guard. The one guy in double figures for the Stars Bryce hit a couple threes and played well in the pick and roll.
Best Underclassmen: Many of course, but haven’t talked Macauley Young. The 6-foot-9 sophomore big had a double-double pf 11 points and 10 rebounds. Did a nice job of staying vertical defensively and went hard after the offensive boards. Also showed a nice tough around the rim.
Best Story to watch Moving Forward: Can TLMM deal with the Skyhawks up front today in the title game? It will be tough. Ogbu is 6-foot-6 and physical, Young is 6-foot-9 and tough to move while TLMM has only two guys over six feet: Jacobs who is a 6-foot-2 shooting guard prospect and 6-foot-3 junior Jaden Reiser.
Best Aspect of the Environment: Talent. This event is a nice showcase of some quality talent at the Class B level. Jacobs and Kludt are excellent leaders for their teams at a young age, Shiloh is loaded throughout their line-up, and Bottineau seems to have some nice guards too.
Best Prospect: Shiloh Size. Both Young and Ogbu have the potential to be scholarship guys for sure. Young has that type of size and Ogbu is that agile and strong. Jacobs could work his way there too and the Bottineau guards could play some juco or maybe even NAIA too. But the top future prospects are Young and Ogbu.
Other: Max Henry. We keep saying Bottineau guards and Max is the other one. He’s a 5-foot-10 junior who does a nice job setting the table as a lead guard. Excellent choices in the pick and roll, nice leader at PG. Also, Jonas Mitzel had a couple driving attack scores in the second half for Shiloh that caught the eye.
