In the end Broad Ripple’s size down low as well as the speed they had was too much for Greenfield-Central. Broad Ripple kept pounding it down low and Greenfield Central really had no answer. Broad Ripple had a seven point halftime lead and extended that out during the second half for a 47-34 win.
Leading scorers: Broad Ripple: Caleb Brown 17, Patrick Wilburn 10. Greenfield-Central: Will O’Connor 14.
Leading rebounders: Broad Ripple: Matthew Henderson 7, Patrick Wilburn 6, Demetrius Young 6. Greenfield-Central: Will O’Connor 3.
MVP: Caleb Brown (Broad Ripple)
Brown was dominant at times down low. He stretched it out to the perimeter as well and looked comfortable out there. Brown is very versatile and can play almost every position on the floor. He is a good rebounder as well. Brown scored a game high 17 points in this one and was very impressive.
Best offensive performance: Will O’Connor (Greenfield-Central)
O’Connor played the point for Greenfield-Central and played pretty well. Not very many turnovers against the much faster Broad Ripple team. He made three deep balls as well. Led his team with 14 points and was efficient in finding teammates and distributing the ball.
Best defensive performance: Patrick Wilburn (Broad Ripple)
Late in the game when Broad Ripple went to their press Wilburn was tasked with face guarding O’Connor. He did a great job not letting him touch the ball and added a steal in the game. He’s very quick and that helps him on defense.
Play of the Game: Senior Drey Jameson hits a half court shot to beat the third quarter buzzer
This shot cut the Broad Ripple lead to seven going into the fourth quarter and gave Greenfield- Central a tiny bit of momentum. I got it on film here: https://twitter.com/MasonHAsher/status/809218467123646470/video/1
Best under-the-radar performance: Sam Colbert (Broad Ripple)
Colbert only had five points and two rebounds but he was really solid the entire game. He added an assist and was the glue of the team. He held them together and kept their heads in the game as they stretched their lead.
Best guy off the bench: Brian Long (Greenfield-Central)
Long is a 6’8 junior who came off the bench and really shut the scoring down of Broad Ripple. He was plugged in for defense and has wingspan really hurt Broad Ripple. He scored three points but his defense was the bigger part in the game.
Best rebounder: Matthew Henderson (Broad Ripple)
Young came off the bench and led in the game with seven rebounds. He has major athleticism and grabbed every board he could. He goes up strong and basically just out jumps everyone else. He’s going to be a perimeter guy that you have to block out.
Best statistic: Broad Ripple wins without a three pointer
Broad Ripple did not make a three pointer in the game and still won. They only attempted four though as they held such a height advantage that they did not have to even shoot many jumpers. Broad Ripple can stretch it out though and make them from there.
Best part of atmosphere: Broad Ripple band
In the young season, the best band I have came upon this year thus far has to be Broad Ripple’s. Drummers were awesome and loud which is the best. Greatest part about it was not having to sit directly beside them and plug my ears.
Best takeaway: Broad Ripple is one of those teams that are flying under-the-radar. They are solid at all levels and have a great inside presence, something that most 2A teams won’t be able to keep up with, much less anyone in the state. Greenfield-Central does not have much size inside but they can shoot it. They struggled with the speed of Broad Ripple tonight.
