Continue ReadingCarroll came out in an extended, three-quarter court 1-2-2 zone to help slow the pace of the game down. A few quick three-point jumpers by Dial from Wayne quickly changed that game plan. Heading into the second quarter Carroll was up 16 – 11 behind a couple three-pointers from J. Redding. Second quarter was much the same way with both teams battling. Wayne was winning the rebound war by seven headed into half but trailed Carroll, 36 – 26.
Coming out in the 3rd quarter, Wayne tried to turn-up the pressure and get the game into a quicker pace but it backfired as Carroll began to extend their lead to double digits. A couple rebound, put-backs by Craig Young of Wayne brought them within 5 at one point in the 3rd quarter but Carroll never looked back. After a flourish of 3 straight dunks in the 4th quarter (2 by C. Young and 1 by Anthony Martin), Carroll finished off the game over Wayne, 69 – 55.
MVP: Jacob Redding (Carroll)
Jacob Redding will be Carroll’s leading scorer this entire season. The senior can score at every level and proved that he will be someone to keep on the scouting reports tonight. He finished with a game high 22 points (5-8 2FG and 4-7 3FG), 3 defensive rebounds and 3 assists. He has moved over from the PG spot last year to the SG position this year and it has really helped him become a better and more efficient scorer. He works well off screens and has the ball handling ability to get to the basket.
Best Offensive Performance: Jacob Redding (Carroll)
Redding will be a name that is talked about all season when Carroll is brought up. The senior combo guard is the definition of a pure scorer. He can fill it up from deep in a hurry if he gets the space to get his shot off. He was aggressive looking for his shot early and drew a lot of attention from Wayne for the remainder of the night. He was still able to finish the game with 22 points on 60% shooting from the floor. He is efficient and effective on the offensive end and Carroll looks to him as their leader.
Best Defensive Performance: Demarea Dial (Wayne)
Demarea Dial was all over the floor tonight on the defensive end. His hustle and tenacity on the defensive end helped keep Wayne in the ball game. He finished the game with 3 steals, 2 deflections, and a block. The 6’1” sophomore guard also took on the role of guarding Carroll’s ball handler full court all night long. He works extremely hard on the defensive end and is Wayne’s defensive stopper night in and night out. He also finished the game with 13 points (0-3 2FG, 4-10 3FG, and 1-2 FT) and 3 defensive rebounds. Dial is a crucial piece to the success of the Generals this season.
Best Under-The-Radar Performance: Arius Jones (Carroll)
Arius Jones is a 6’3” combo guard who has talent in every facet of the game. Arius finished the game with a quiet 14 points (3-5 2FG, 0-1 3FG, and 8-8 FT), 6 rebounds (4 defensive and 2 offensive), 6 assists, 2 deflections, and a steal for the Chargers in their 14-point victory. Arius had the ball in his hands every possession for Carroll as they rely heavily on him as their PG and distributor. He is very good at getting into the lane and finding the open man (J. Redding and D. Redding tonight). He has the athleticism and poise to finish around the rim and over bigs as well.
Best Player Off-The-Bench: Dillon Redding (Carroll)
Dillon Redding, younger brother of game MVP Jacob Redding, was great off the bench for Carroll tonight. The junior finished the game with 10 points (2-2 2FG and 2-4 3 FG), 1 offensive rebound, and an assist in the win. Dillon was also solid on the defensive end of the floor for the Chargers, doing the little things to make them successful against a more athletic Wayne team. If Dillon can continue to be consistent off the bench for the Chargers this season, they will be able to go deeper into their bench during crucial moments in the game.
Biggest Impact Player: Jared Hofer (Carroll)
Jared Hofer was an instant impact when he was on the floor. Despite some foul trouble, the big 6’9” forward was too much to handle inside for Wayne. He finished the game with 5 points (2-3 2FG and 1-2 FT), 2 rebounds, 2 steals, and 3 blocks. He moved people around inside and got to his spots whenever he wanted too. He bothered a lot of the General’s attempts around the basket including blocking 3 of them. Jared needs to work on his lateral quickness and footwork to stay on the floor longer because he is a menace inside in this contest.
Best Intangibles: Riley Perlich (Carroll)
Riley Perlich did it all for Carroll tonight. He is the vocal leader on the defensive back line for Carroll and is consistent in his play on both ends of the floor. Perlich is one of those players that you know what you’re going to get out of every single night. He isn’t going to necessarily fill the stat sheet every night but he will give you great minutes on both ends. Riley finished tonight with 13 points (3-6 2FG, 1-1 3FG, and 4-4 FT), 5 rebounds, 2 assists, and a steal. He was also the first to hit the floor and put his body on the line for the team.
Best Rebounder: Craig Young (Wayne)
Craig Young was on the glass all night long. His aggressiveness, strength, and athleticism allow him to rebound over the biggest man on the floor. Young finished the game with a game high 11 rebounds (3 defensive and 8 offensive). Even when there was resistance on the glass, he was still able to find a way to high point the ball and secure the rebounds. His quick leaping ability along with his good hands make him a superb rebounder (and WR in Football) for the Wayne Generals.
Best Underclassmen: Craig Young (Wayne)
The 6’5” sophomore forward was struggling early on to get involved in the flow of the game but he finished with 21 points (8-15 2FG, 1-1 3FG, and 2-6 FT), 11 rebounds (3 defensive and 8 offensive), 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 block. Young was the only player to post a double-double in the contest and also finished with 2 thunderous dunks in the 4th quarter. His athleticism was unmatched by the Chargers and he began to take over in the second half of the game where he grabbed 7 of his 8 offensive rebounds. If he can get going early in future games, he will be a handful for a lot of teams in the Fort Wayne area.
Biggest Takeaway: Open vs Half Court Styles
Carroll and Wayne wanted tonight to be at two different paces. Carroll wanted to played a controlled fast-break style whereas the Generals wanted the game to be a track meet. There were spurts where Wayne made runs because they were able to speed Carroll up the point of causing turnovers but for the most part, Carroll controlled the flow of the game. Arius did a great job for Carroll picking spots to push the floor and others to look for the best shot possible. Both teams will be fun to watch as the season progresses and in the future because they are both relatively young rosters.
