Continue ReadingEarly season matchups can be misleading, especially for two teams like this that both saw success in football and recently just had their best players return. Eastern View is coming off of one of their best seasons in school history, and look to be one of the early season favorites in a wide open VHSL 4A classification this year. The Cyclones led from tip to buzzer in this one, as they beat Chancellor 93-61, led by the senior backcourt duo of Anias Saunders and Cameron Norman.
MVP | Cameron Norman | Eastern View ’17
Norman showed confidence and swagger from the moment he stepped on the court as he knew nobody could guard him. He shot it consistently, made plays on the defensive end and led both vocally and by example throughout the game.
Best Play
As Eastern View was establishing dominance early with their press, they showed they liked to run as well. With 1:40 left in the first quarter, senior athlete Mandrell Jackson took an outlet pass, slowed up to gather his feet and threw down a two handed slam while getting fouled from behind. It put EV up 24-8 and had the crowd in a frenzy before the first quarter was over.
Best Offensive Performance | Cameron Norman | Eastern View ’17
Mentioned earlier that Norman had a swagger that no one could guard him, it was mainly because he couldn’t miss! The senior transfer from Good Counsel (MD) finished with 27 points, but it was his efficiency. He was 5-for-5 from deep in the first half, and finished the game 9-for-13 from the field and 7-for-8 from deep. Kid is an absolute sniper.
Best Defensive Performance | Eastern View Press
It’s hard to give this award to just one player, because the Cyclones played great team defense in the press. They like to force turnovers and get out and run, so at times guys would gamble and get out of position, but they rotated well and covered each other, allowing each other to take risks and make plays defensively.
Best Under the Radar Performance | Coen King | Eastern View ’18
King is a big, big guy, and he’s also a crowd favorite. He started out at Eastern View as a project, and has slimmed down enough to where he can give meaningful minutes in the post if they need size. He finished with eight points, and cleared out space on the glass with ease.
Best Guy off the Bench | Cameron Spangler | Eastern View ’18
EV played a lot of their bench throughout the game, however Spangler was the only one that finished in double figures and it made sense. He took good shots, took care of the basketball and contributed on both the defensive end and on the glass as well.
Best Underclassman | Blake Leake | Eastern View ’20
Leake showed a lot of potential for just a freshman. He has good size at 6’2″, showed that he can put it on the floor in drive-and-kick scenarios, rebounded well and showed a soft touch from multiple levels. He’ll be one to watch for sure moving forward.
Best Intangibles | Anias Saunders | Eastern View ’17
Saunders didn’t get off to a great start in the intangibles category, committing three turnovers in the first quarter, but it was the way he handled it. Despite finishing with 16 points and leading the team in rebounds, Saunders didn’t play his best, but he never lost confidence. Whether he didn’t get a call, missed an open shot or committed a turnover, he didn’t hang his head, he just moved on to the next play. That’s what makes him such an effective leader.
Best Rebounder | Yetur Matos | Chancellor ’17
The Penn State football commit was just a man amongst boys in the paint. At 6’5″, 235 lbs., Matos took advantage of a guard heavy Eastern View team and was able to dominate the glass on both ends and finish in the paint with ease. He finished with 15 points, and likely had a double-double.
Best Quote | Patrick Thornhill | Eastern View Head Coach
“Jack, you can steal him whenever you want as long as he shoots the ball that well for me!” (In regards to me interviewing Cameron Norman after going 7-for-8 from downtown.)
