Top Individual Performances
- SF Washington beat Yankton and Jack Talley had a double-double of 16 and 10 in a close game.
- The big individual performance of the night though was 6-foot-6 8th grader Matthew Mors tying a school record with 41 points on 12 of 20 shooting from the field.
- Jeffrey Schuch is a player we identified this summer with the SD Heat and thought he would have a big year. Last night he led Dell Rapids with 25 points and 10 rebounds.
- The pair of Bennett White and Darian Ogunjemilusi gives Wolsey-Wessington one of the best 1-2 scoring punches in the state. They had 22 and 20 respectively last night outscoring Mitchell Christian themselves by 12 points.
- There were many good performances from the Winnebago, Nebraska team that won the Lakota Nation Invitational Saturday night. This is a team that won every game by 50 plus points. Guys like David Wingett and D’von LaPointe entertained crowds throughout the event.
Back on Track
- Aberdeen Central’s 46-45 win gets them to 2-1 and further puts the Sturgis loss in the rear view mirror. Also drops Watertown to 0-3.
- Injuries, Wyoming opponents, and the Mitchell game being cancelled was tough on the RC Central Cobblers. They went 0-3 to start eh year but beat Douglas last night by nine. They need to get healthy quick with Dickinson (top five in North Dakota) and Sturgis-Brown coming up.
- Alcester-Hudson ended a three game losing streak with an eight point win over Gayville-Volin last night. The Cubs are 2-3 after losing some last minute contests.
- Another Class B team that rebounded well from a loss was Lake Preston. A blowout loss to Wolsey-Wessington can get anybody down but the Divers grabbed a 60-35 victory in response.
- The defending Class AA champs dropped the rivalry game to O’Gorman by two scores but last night came back to beat Harrisburg by 19. Patriot basketball next has Marshall (the second ranked team in Minnesota in Class AAA) and then Edina (a top ten team in Minnesota’s biggest class of hoops, Class AAAA).
Still Rolling
- Brookings is now 3-0 after knocking off Huron by a basket. They will be the favorite in the next three or four games heading into the Brandon Valley contest so this is a team that could make a great run to start the year.
- Bridgewater-Emery is one of the deepest and most talented teams in Class B. Grabbed a nice win over Canistota last night and now has nine days off before taking on Class B number one Chester Area and then playing a top Class A top five team from Minnesota (Prairie Seeds Academy, Class A is Minnesota’s small school division) in the Miller Classic.
- Chester Area is number one and we don’t care that they lost to a bigger school to start the year. Last night they crushed MCM 73-29. They are still rolling from last year and they should roll all season.
- Brandon Valley is for real? Believe it. The win over Huron was a good sign and taking #1 O’Gorman to the final play was the biggest sign. Last night the Lynx controlled Roosevelt for the 19 point win.
- The Pirates are sailing strong on the high seas of hoops beating Jones County and then Kimball/White Lake by big margins. Highmore-Harrold should be 3-0 when they face Stanley County after the new year.
Undefeated still
- The Hawks of Colman-Egan beat Castlewood by two points and has then beat opponents in a big way since. They took out Elkton-Lake Benton 68-42. So far they have been consistent giving up 41, 42, and 42 points.
- Flandreau hammered a Castlewood team that we just talked about taking Colman-Egan to the buzzer. When does the big test come for the Fliers? The Dakota Valley game is December 29th.
- Should we have had JVC in the initial top ten? Most likely. That mistake was fixed yesterday and then the Vikes made us look good with a seven point win over Ethan.
- See that Scooper record? That would be 3-0. Sturgis Brown beat Spearfish 71-60 and it making believers out of people. The Rapid City Stevens game is on January 13th and everybody should mark that down. There is a real chance the Scoopers will be 7-0 or 6-1 when that tips off.
- Vermillion is a proud 5-0 after surviving the game with Tri-Valley 53-48 on the road. It’s going to be tough for just about anybody to deal with that talented backcourt.
