SPRINGFIELD — St. Louis Lafayette held off a pesky Springfield Central squad for a 68-63 win in the opening round of the MBCA Hall of Fame Classic at Parkview High School.
Despite losing several players to transfer in the offseason, Central hung tough with a good Lafayette squad that had them outmanned in the paint. The game went down to the wire but the Lancers were able to close it out on the free throw line.
Scouting report
Central Bulldogs: Unlike previous years, this Central team can really shoot the ball. Have several players that can knock down 3-pointers, have some size inside in Robert Galvin and some nice players off the bench as well. Although they are 0-2 this season after an earlier loss to Willard to start the season, Central is much improved and poised to have a nice season.
Lafayette Lancers: Senior-laden team with a nice backcourt in Adam Flinn, Jake Messer and Kory Brubaker, a tough 1-2 punch in the paint in Chris Harstick and Trey Griffey and some depth off the bench. Lafayette handles the ball well and is a hard-nosed scrappy team that really beat up Central in the paint.
MVP: Adam Flinn (Lafayette): A 6-foot guard, Flinn was able to carve out space and get into the lane at will against Central. A standout ball handler, Flinn controlled the tempo of the game throughout and was able to put points on the board when it mattered. He finished with a game-high 21 points for Lafayette.
Best Offensive Player: Adam Flinn (Lafayette): Kid can really play and do a lot of things on the court. He averaged 11 points and made 33 3-pointers last season and has appears to have taken his game to another level with the graduation of leading scorer Luke Finley.
Junkyard Dog: Donte Reese (Central): Kid that has some size and athleticism and really gets after it at both ends of the floor.
Best shooter: Bryson and Braden Dankert (Central): The two seniors guards were knock down shooters throughout the contest, combining for seven 3-pointers, including several from well beyond the arc.
Best player off the Bench: Steve Pennington (Lafayette): These two teams didn’t really rely much on their bench play, but Pennington came up big hitting a pair of 3-pointers and finishing with eight total points for Lafayette.
Top Match-Up: Central’s Robert Galvin against the big Lafayette front line of 6-7 2018 Chris Harstick and 6-7 2019 Trey Griffey. Galvin finished with 16, while Harstick and Griffey combined for 14 points.
Name you should know: Chris Harstick (Lafayette) 6-7 2018 big man is long and active and is new to the Lancer lineup.
Top underclassman (2019, 2020): Trey Griffey (Lafayette) a 6’6 2019 forward, Griffey brings size to the lineup and has the ability to step away from the basket and knock down outside shots.
