SPRINGFIELD — Parkview trailed by 10 points with 4:30 remaining in the game, but turned up the defensive pressure and got several big baskets from JT Brown, Dontee Taylor and Lencorya Grady and were within two points twice late in the game, but couldn’t get a stop as DeSmet got buckets from Sean Skoff and Josiah Tynes to pull out a 65-62 win.
Scouting report
DeSmet Spartans: They played almost the entire second half without Bradley recruit Ryan Stipanovich who suffered a cut above his eye on a hard foul. Without the 6’7 wing on the floor it was evident they are a totally different team. They struggled at times against Parkview’s pressure defense late in the game and keeping the Vikings in front at the defensive end. On the other hand, they made enough plays to weather the storm.
Parkview Vikings: These guys were impressive at the defensive end of the court, really getting into DeSmet and making it tough for the Spartans to run their offense.
MVP: JT Brown (Parkview). A long 6’2 2017 guard, Brown finished with 21 points in a losing cause, 17 of which came in the second half. He can plays under control, even running the point for large stretches, has a smooth outside jumper, and can attack the basket with the best of them where he uses terrific body control to finish tough chances. Brown is poised for a big senior season.
Best Offensive Player: JT Brown (Parkview). Had his struggles in the first half and had just four points at the break as he struggled with his outside shot. But the second half saw Brown attack the basket and finish some tough chances in the paint. He has a nice outside shooting stroke even though they weren’t falling on Thursday.
Junkyard Dog: Sean Skoff (DeSmet): With Stipanovich out of the lineup throughout much of the second half, Skoff stepped up big, scoring 11 points in the second half, including a pair of 3s to help DeSmet fend of the Vikings down the stretch. He finished with 15 total points.
Best shooter: Brooks Ford (DeSmet): Son of St. Louis head coach Travis Ford didn’t shoot much in the game, but when he did, he made them. Finished with 12 points and two 3-pointers.
Top Bench Player: Lencorya Grady (Parkviiew). At just 5’5, this 2018 guard can really play. Has a nice outside shooting touch, can get to the basket and plays under control. He plays much, much bigger than his listed height. Finished with 17 points off the bench.
Best rebounder: Ryan Stipanovich (DeSmet) 6’7 Bradley signee had it going on the boards throughout the first half, but went out of the game with 10 points early in the third quarter when he was fouled on a three-play play. Stipanovich was the tallest player in the game when he was on the floor and was aggressive at both ends of the floor rebounding the ball.
Top match-up: Ryan Stipanovh vs. Jesse Brown. These two really went hard at it throughout the contest, with both players having some good moments.
Name you should know: Evan Asleson (DeSmet). A 5’11 2020 guard, Asleson was on the court for nearly the entire fourth quarter, playing key minutes down the stretch. Nailed a pair of 3s and had a couple of key blocks even at the defensive end. Slender player, but appears poised for prime time minutes in the future.
Top underclassman (2019, 2020): Dontae Taylor (Parkview) a 6’0 2020 guard. Taylor finished with 13 points and had the highlight of the night, flipping in a running scoop shot while being fouled late in the fourth quarter.
