Team Scouting
Farmington: The Knights enjoyed an excellent week with two victories, including a win over eventual tournament champion Belleville West. They are young and very talented and will win a lot of games this year. They have an excellent scoring threat in 6’3″ 2018 wing Brendon Hardy and a couple of real nice 2019 prospects in 6’3″ workhorse Tycen Gray and 6’6″ post Cole Laurence.
Eureka: It took a while for the Wildcats to get going offensively, but they showed their ability during its second half comeback. Their top scorer on this evening was 6’3″ 2019 Avery Taggert, who has a nice stroke from long distance. Top scorer Alex Cleary had an off-shooting night, but he is a capable 3-point threat who will score. The Wildcats do not have a lot of size, but they play hard and with a lot of energy.
Now, for the 10 Best:
MVP: Brendon Hardy (Farmington): The 6’3″ junior wing scored a game-high 22 points to lead the Knights. Hardy is an aggressive and resourceful offensive player who was good at going to the basket and finishing off the drive. He also knocked down a couple of 3-pointers and displayed a nice float game.
Best Offensive Player: Brendon Hardy (Farmington): See Above
Best Defensive Player: Hasaan Haskins (Eureka): A talented running back on the Wildcats’ football team, the 6’1″ junior displayed strength and toughness on the defensive end. He guarded multiple positions on the floor and picked a couple of pockets off his man’s dribble.
Best Shooter: Avery Taggert (Eureka): A sturdy 6’3″ small forward, Tagger scored a team-high 16 points, which included four 3-pointers. Taggert knows how to play the game as well as having the ability to get buckets from the perimeter.
Best Motor: Tycen Gray (Farmington): One of the biggest revelations of the first weeks of the season was this rugged 6’3″ sophomore. He plays with great passion and his motor never stops. He finished with 11 points and a bunch of rebounds. He also had 22 points in the upset of Belleville West. If you cannot match his intensity and fire, it’s going to be a long night for you.
Best Low Post Threat: Cole Laurence (Farmington): The 6’6″ sophomore post finished with 11 points. He has a big body and a nice touch around the basket. He moves pretty well and he can also pass out of a double team. He has a chance to be a really nice prospect.
Best Bench Player: Cam’Ron Like (Eureka): The 6’0″ senior guard finished with 13 points and lit a fire under a struggling Eureka team as they mounted their second-half comeback. Like made three 3-pointers and really played with a lot of confidence.
Best Rebounder: Tycen Gray (Farmington): See Above
Best Passer: Alex England (Farmington): The 6’2″ senior guard dropped some nifty dimes to open teammates throughout the game. I was impressed with his ability to deliever the rock
