Freshman Show Out In First High School Game
If I said Damon Bailey’s son had a good game, that might be about the least surprising thing you heard expect for IPFW’s win over Indiana. The newest edition to the Bedford North Lawrence team, Brayton Bailey, a 6’2 guard, had himself a debut in a win over Brown County. He went for 12 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals. Expect to see this a lot out of him this year as he is pretty advanced for his age and obviously has the genes to get it done.
He wasn’t the only freshman to have a big game. Greensburg freshman forward Andrew Welage, younger brother of San Jose State forward Ryan Welage, helped his team to a win over North Decatur. Andrew had 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists in his first high school game. He’s a little different than his brother but should be the same thorn in the side of whoever Greensburg is playing that night.
Upsets On Night One
There were a few games that came across that shook the head last night. One of the bigger ones was Bethesda Christian’s overtime win over Covenant Christian. Covenant was one of my sleepers in 2A this season. They have four guys on that roster than can be pretty good but this clearly wasn’t the result you would like to see out of their first game.
Goshen beating Mishawaka Marian is a little bit of an upset. When the AP put out their poll and ranked Marian in the Top 10 in 3A, I was pretty sure they missed the boat, however, I did believe they would be a solid team and an early four-point loss to Goshen isn’t helping.
Henryville beating Silver Creek in overtime really surprised me. Henryville might have their best team in a while and that reaffirms my thought that this outcome says as much about Henryville as it does Silver Creek. Silver Creek did lose a couple big pieces but a good chunk of that team is back. Henryville got 25 points out of Braxton Robertson, their 6’5 post. If they get that type of production, Silver Creek might not be the only big name team they knock off. We also have video of the finish from @HornetNews2:

The biggest upset of the night came from Mt. Vernon-Fortville’s double-overtime loss to Whiteland. Mt. Vernon was set to be one of the best teams in the state but they got put to the test in their first game and came up short. Mt. Vernon’s star guard Michael Ertel ended with 30 points but it wasn’t enough. Whiteland was a team that I thought could be a contender come Sectional time but that was only if some of their younger talent could step up. With a big win under their belts, we will see how they do.
