A lot of money comes in from the football gates but a few players from WNC are starting to change that perspective. Here is a look at some of the top performers so far in the mountains of North Carolina.
Isaiah PruettOne of the best point guard prospects in the area is 5-foot-9 Isaiah Pruett of Reynolds High School. Pruett is a pass first point guard who can also fill it up in the scoring column when needed, In the game against Shelby High School. Pruett had 23 points and make six three-point shots. He is a defensive pest who is always in your face and can make the offensive player go the way that he wants. He is a great passer with tremendous court vision. Reynolds is off to a 1-3 start to the season and play Thursday against North Henderson.
The top ranked prospect in the mountains at the public school level is 6-foot-5 forward Austin Nelson of North Henderson High School. The Knights are off to a 1-1 record so far this season. The Co-player of the year in the conference last season, Nelson is a point forward who can play up to four positions on the floor. He is strong enough to battle down low and has the handle of a guard. In a loss to Owen High School, Nelson had 26 points and 5 rebounds and a win against North Buncombe High School he had 23 points and 17 rebounds.
Freshman Callin Randolph of Mountain Heritage High School started his high school career off with a bang in a win over Tuscola with 31 points and has helped The Cougars to a 1-1 record so far this season. Randolph is a shooter’s shooter. He has great range as soon as he steps on the floor. He will be a name to watch over the next four seasons in Western North Carolina.
Ben Craig, Matthew Brown and Brian Bartlett are having a superb seasons so far for the undefeated Warhorses. The shooting guard Craig had 26 points in a win over Asheville Trailblazers 94-64. Big man Matthew Brown, at 6-foot-5 had 33 points and 11 rebounds against North Henderson HS. Bartlett, a 6-foot-3 shooting guard had 23 points and 14 rebounds against North Henderson HS and 26 points and 10 rebound against Asheville Trailblazers.
