Harrison took an early lead into the second quarter but the Bronchos were able to get the game at the pace they liked it. They began pressing the Raider late into the second quarter and there was no looking back. Heading into the third quarter the Bronchos held a 43-40 lead. Harrison was able to keep the game close throughout but ended up falling short 72-64.
MVP: David Hanyard (Lafayette Jeff)
Apart from some foul trouble, Hanyard was unstoppable tonight. Hanyard stat line: 24 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. He got it done on the offensive end and the defensive end racking up a game high in steals. He also did his part on the boards and dished out a few assists. He lead the game in scoring and was a dominant force every time he stepped foot on the floor. He was a matchup nightmare for Harrison all night.
Best Offensive Performance: David Hanyard (Lafayette Jeff)
Hanyard did his damage at every level tonight. He posted 24 points (6-12 2FG, 1-2 3FG. and 9-12 FT). He was efficient in his scoring and didn’t really get it going until the second quarter. He was able to get to the rim at will and created his own shot whenever he wanted. Had he seen more minutes on the floor we would have seen a higher point total.
Best Defensive Performance: Alex Bauer (Harrison)
Alex Bauer was tasked with guarding Lafayette Jeff’s best player, David Hanyard, from the tip. Although the final stat line would say otherwise, Bauer was impressive on the defensive end. In the first quarter alone he came up with 2 big steals that would have lead to easy layups and was stopping Hanyard from getting comfortable. Bauer also hauled in a pair of rebounds.
Best Under-The-Radar Performance: Bobby Dearing (Harrison)
Dearing was the most complete and consistent player for Harrison all night. Dearing had 15 points (6-9 FG and 3-3 FT) and 3 rebounds. He was good with the ball in his hands on the perimeter and made good decisions all throughout the night. Dearing was able to show off his athleticism with a nice one-handed throw-down on the fast-break late in the game.
Best Player Off-The-Bench: Avery Beaver (Lafayette Jeff)
Beaver came off the bench ready to go. He showed off his offensive prowess going 4-5 from the field and 3-4 from deep to be second on the team in scoring with 11 points. Beaver was a consistent threat throughout the game and saw starter minutes (20:11 – 5th most on team).
Play of the Game: Benito Munoz (Harrison)
Benito Munoz was hot from deep finishing 5-9 from three-point range. Late in the 3rd quarter Harrison began to make a little run to bring the game close which started with Harrison using a press of their own. Harrison got a steal and after swinging the ball around the perimeter got Munoz a wide-open three that he buried to bring Harrison back within three.
Best Intangibles: Danny Isbell (Lafayette Jeff)
Danny Isbell used his athleticism and IQ to be one of Lafayette Jeff’s best players tonight. Isbell scored 11 points, grabbed 5 rebounds, and had a game high 5 assists. He seemed to be in the midst of it all and made good decisions with the ball all night. He was deceptive with his passing and aggressiveness because of his high basketball IQ. Isbell was also presented with an award pre-game based on his GPA.
Best Rebounder: Jakub Hall (Harrison)
Jakub Hull had a tough night from the field but was able to give Harrison something with his minutes. Hull brought in a game high 11 rebounds (7 defensive and 4 offensive) throughout the game. Aside from being a focal point in the offense, Hull impressed by crashing the glass on both ends of the floor to give his team second chances and to put an end to offensive possessions for the Bronchos.
Best Underclassmen: Avery Beaver (Lafayette Jeff)
Beaver came off the bench tonight and got good minutes because of his production. He is only a freshman but looked very composed on the floor and has the ability to stretch the defense with his outside shot. The young lefty was 3-4 from deep and all three came in the 4th quarter during crunch time. The freshman is not afraid of the big shot and will be a player to watch in the coming future.
Biggest Takeaway: Different Play Styles
The Bronchos seemed to play better when the game was getting up and down the floor with some pace. Harrison was a better team in the half court when they could control the speed of the game. This conflicting styles lead to runs being made by both teams that required coaches to use timeouts. Harrison even through a press at the Bronchos that helped them get back in the game. Good seasons ahead for both teams.
