REPUBLIC — Few teams playing better, more disciplined basketball than the Republic Tigers and the team made life difficult for an Oak Park team that is coming off a 6-18 season.
Republic got a game-high 16 points from 2017 PG Ty Stevens while 2017 G Treydon Rackley added 11 points. The Tigers outscored Oak Park 21-10 in the third quarter and took advantage of foul trouble by several Oak Park starters, including 2018s Ochai Agbaji and Shaidyn Richardson, both of whom fouled out.
Scouting report
Oak Park: Fans probably didn’t see Oak Park at their best Monday night, even though they hung tough with a Republic squad that figures to be among the Springfield area’s best this season. 2018 guard Kaden Evans struggled to find the range in the early going and had three points through the first three quarters, while Ochai Agbaji had two at the half and fouled out in the third with nine points. Those two and Ronnie Goods are a terrific guard combo and the Northmen should rebound and have a nice season.
Republic: Senior laden squad that has good guard play, good shooters, some size and really knows how to play winning basketball. The Tigers backcourt of Ty Stevens, Treydon Rackley and Mitch Coiner are experienced and hard nosed and its frontcourt of Cameron Doke and Caleb Singley, while undersized, is active.
MVP: Ty Stevens, Republic. Senior point guard is a terrific floor general and on Monday, showed off some leaping ability, throwing down a backdoor alley-oop dunk off a set play. He finished with 16 in a low scoring game, but it was his ability to lead that Tigers that stood out as much as his production.
Top performers
Ty Stevens, 6’1, PG, 2017, Republic
Treydon Rackley, 6’1, G, 2017, Republic
Caleb Singley, 6’3, F, 2017, Republic
Ronnie Goods, 5’11, G, 2017, Oak Park
Josiah Becker, 6’3, F, 2018, Oak Park
Kaden Evans, 6’1, G, 2018, Oak Park
Play of the night: Easy one here, Ty Stevens’ surprise two-handed flush on an alley-oop on a set play in the halfcourt in the third quarter. The Tiger point guard converted the same play with a lay-in in the first half.
Best guy off the bench: Josiah Becker, Oak Park. Big man was active on the boards for Belton and really kept the team in the game in the fourth quarter. He finished with 11, but his activity in the paint for the Northmen was big.
Name you should know: Ochai Agbaji, Oak Park. Fouls really kept the talented guard out of the game for the most part, but he is among the Kansas City area’s top 2018 guards and a player that is poised for a big season. Look for him to have a big bounce back game in the consolation side on Friday against Rolla.
