Continue ReadingNorth Central comes into the season as a consensus top five team in the state and much of that success can be given to their point guard Mateo Rivera. The 6′ guard plays alongside one of the top players in the nation, but the team is led by Rivera and relies on him to lead their team and facilitate the ball to the scorers.
Even though Rivera has more talented scorers around him he can score as well. Rivera has a smooth shot that is overlooked and can knock it down from deep. This can create havoc on opposing defenses when they have to defend the dual threat of a great passer and shooter at the same time.
This summer while running with Indiana Elite Central, Rivera thought that it went really well. The team was successful and they got what they wanted out of the summer. Rivera helped his recruiting out by playing well but still only has one offer to date. Southern Indiana has offered him and he has visited on an unofficial.
Rivera spent a lot of his summer trying to improve his game and will continue to do so throughout the winter working on some key components of his game.
“I mainly worked on trying to be more versatile with the ways I can score and I am making sure that I am in the best condition.”
This upcoming season North Central should be one of the top teams in the state and should by the end of the year be playing deep into the tournament. Rivera is ready for the chance to win a state title.
“I am looking forward to putting forth everything we have and hopefully going out on top by winning a state title.”
As for a future school Rivera is sure to receive a few offers this winter as he can make an impact at any level and he has an idea of what he will be looking for in a school.
“I want a school that is going to push me academically. I plan to study engineering. As far as basketball I hope to have a coach that trusts me and has confidence in me to run a team and players that will just give it their all every game.”
