The 6’1″ Harper is a 1,000-yard receiver for the Hornets, who are currently 13-0 heading into the semifinals of the Class 1 state playoffs against perennial powerhouse Valle.
Harper has enjoyed a ton of success on the football field with his sparkling athleticism, yet he says his favorite sport is basketball, where he is also a dynamic and explosive performer.
“I enjoy playing football, but I like basketball better because I’ve grown up playing it,” he said. “Playing football gives me a good break from basketball.”
As a sophomore, Harper led the Hornets to a 22-4 record and a district championship. He was an excellent all-around performer, averaging 18.7 points, five rebounds and three steals while shooting 52 percent from the field and 35 percent from 3-point range. Harper does some of his best work above the rim, where he has been known to throw down impressive dunks on a regular basis.
“My strengths are scoring the ball, but I can play pretty good on-ball defense,” Harper said. “We want to win, so I have to play just about anywhere that I’m needed.”
Harper had a chance to improve his skills while playing for the MoKan Select 16U team during the grassroots season. On a grassroots team that did not have much size, Harper spent time playing anywhere from guard to in the post playing against bigger players.
“Playing for MoKan helped me out a lot,” he said. “I think I improved my game quite a bit. I’m playing more above the rim and my rebounding has improved as well. When you’re playing against players on the national level, you definitely have to step up your game. It’s a lot tougher, but I like the challenge.”
