The 6’4″ Davis scored on a offensive put back at the buzzer to give the Yellowjackets a dramatic 49-47 victory over Mercer in the Class 1 state quarterfinals, thus sending his team to the Final Four of the state tournament in Columbia. Davis’ game-winning shot was reminiscent of the shot that Lorenzo Charles made to give North Carolina State the victory over Houston in the 1983 NCAA championship game. The Yellowjackets went on to finish third in the state tournament.
“It was awesome,” Davis said. “It was exciting to get to the Final Four and the way we got down there was just crazy. It was a great experience. Our hope is to get back down there again and hopefully win it this time.”
If Glasgow is to return to the Final Four, the return of Davis will be a big reason why. At 240 pounds, Davis is a big, strong physical player who can overpower teams with his strength. He is a threat to achieve a double-double every time he steps on the floor. He has a chance to finish his high school career with more than 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.
“My rebounding is my biggest strength,” Davis said. “I don’t think I ever step out of the post, but I am working to expand my game. I have been working on my shooting and dribbling.”
Davis spent the summer playing with the Missouri Hustle Central 17U team. He got a chance to match his skills inside with players who were much taller during the grassroots circuit, but he held his own because of his strength.
“It was a huge difference in high school the competition was so good and the players were bigger and faster,” he said. “I’m glad I got to play during the summer and I look forward to starting the high school season.”
