The 6’6″ Whitlock played for the Missouri Impact 17U team where he emerged as a very viable scoring threat in the low post. Whitlock did an excellent job at scoring around the basket with both hands. He displayed a nice shooting touch from the high post and he even started finishing around the basket with some strong slam dunks.
“The summer helped me a lot because I have a lot more confidence dribbling the basketball and making moves,” Whitlock said. “Before, all I did was play with my back to the basket and make hook shots.”
Whitlock’s development as a high school post player as earned him some interest from a number of small colleges around the region. He has already made a visit to Blackburn College (Ill). He has also heard from Greenville and Illinois College. Whitlock has come a long way in the years since beginning to play basketball as an awkward junior high player.
“When I started playing in seventh grade, I was terrible,” Whitlock said. “It makes me feel good to know how bad I used to be and come around to the point where some colleges are looking at me.”
As a junior, Whitlock averaged 6.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in helping St. Charles to a 14-10 record last season. The Pirates had a respectable year in a rebuilding year after winning the Class 4 state championship in 2015 with a senior-laden team. The Pirates have a chance to become a factor in the state race once again and Whitlock’s continued development as an inside presence can help in that regard.
“My goals are to average about 12 points, eight rebounds and three blocks,” he said. “This season, we would like to get back to the Final Four.”
