In the second of five state-wide breakdowns — southwest Missouri, central Missouri, St. Louis and southeast Missouri — we break down the POY candidates from the Springfield region.
Caleb Bennett, 6-4, G, Lafayette (2017)
A few months after committed to play at Lehigh, Bennett is hoping to lead his high school team back to the Final Four. A multidimensional guard, Bennett is an athletic player that can attack the basket and shoot from the outside.
Diego Bernard, 5-10, PG, Lafayette (2018)
Although Bennett gets a lot of attention at Lafayette, and for good reason, Bernard is also a big part of the team’s attack. He is a hard-charging point guard that makes plays and can get to the bucket at will. He is largely flying under the radar in the recruiting circles, but is poised for a big junior season.
Elijah Childs, 6-7, F, Lee’s Summit West (2017)
A silky smooth left hander, Childs is a face-up 4 man that can dominate the paint or play on the perimeter. He has signed to play at Bradley and brings a level of play that will be difficult for teams to match in the high school game.
Steve Dulley, 6-2, G, Lincoln Prep (2017)
A do-everything guard that has a big frame and a high motor, Dulley is coming off a terrific summer and is starting to draw college interest from a host of college programs.
Jacob Gilyard, 5-10, PG, Barstow (2017)
Has one of the more impressive resumes put together by a high school player in recent years after taking basketball by storm as a freshman. Will be counted on for more scoring this year with the graduation of several key seniors. A dynamic defensive player, Gilyard has signed to play at Richmond.
Jordan Lathon, 6-4, PG, Grandview (2018)
A skilled point guard with terrific size and athleticism, Lathon has Division I offers from numerous mid-major and high-major programs and those offers continue to pour in this fall. He is a terrific leader with a lot of potential.
Lamel Robinson, 5-11, PG, Park Hill South (2019)
One of the state’s premier up-and-coming young players, Robinson is coming off a summer that saw him lead the KC Run GMC 15Us to a No. 1 ranking. He has already drawn an offer from Kansas State and more is likely on the way.
Sevon Witt, 6-6, PF, Raytown South (2018)
An athletic forward that can do a little bit of everything, Witt is positioned for a big junior season after helping Raytown South capture a district title and enter the playoffs a year ago. We look for him to start garnering serious college attention over the course of the next year as well.
