Commentary
With Sioux Falls Christian, Madison, Dell Rapids, and Flandreau all in the region you can definitely say that the Region fall, and maybe even semi-final is as tough as the first round game of the state tournament (pending the draw of course)….SF Christian, Madison, and Dell Rapids are all in the Dak XII so they will have experience against one another before meeting in the regions. They could even have a couple games against each other pending the draw they get in some of the special events….
A year ago the Chargers of SF Christian were 22-3 and won a state title. With Fykstra, Oppold, and Unruh back plus some good players returning from the JV they are the favorite. They handled Madison by 19 a year ago and beat Flandreau by 30. The team that gave them the most trouble? Dell Rapids of course. Dell Rapids beat the Chargers in the first two games but in the Region final it was a one point win for the eventual state champs. Many believe that that game was the actual state title contest and that tells you how tough this region is. That said, Ty Hoglund has moved on and considering how many current seniors have recently listed him as the toughest player to play again in recent interviews, that is a good thing for other teams. Dell Rapids will not go away though as they have a lot of good talent. The question is, who can lead that talent? Replacing the mere presence of Hoglund will be difficult….
We really like the depth of Madison but we aren’t sure they have a go to scorer. They have several excellent pieces but which piece is the main scoring piece? Dell Rapids has Siemonsma and Schmuch who seem more comfortable being a go to scorer….Watch out for Flandreau who was 13-9 a year ago but should improve by at least five wins.
Top Match-Up to See
Dylan LeBrun vs DeJay Fykstra. It looks like the only time this game can happen is in Regions but if and when it does the LeBrun vs Fykstra battle will be outstanding. Fykstra can play the defending role while LeBrun is a know scorer.
