Conference Commentary
State Contender: Minot, Century
Minot has brought him the gold each of the last two seasons even though Century was undefeated in the league last year and often ranked number one in state. They are near the top of the list for both the league and state again this season only Minot has more experience back while Century may have the edge in talent throughout the line-up. Should be a great battle once again.
On the Verge: Dickinson, Mandan
Dickinson improved last year by nine games plus had a nice 12-6 league record. Now the Midgets need to make the next jump which is getting wins over Century and Minot. With D1 committed talents in Aanen Moody (UND) and Jordan Meidinger (NDSU) plus others back the talent is there and the time is now to make the jump to the next level. Mandan isn’t in the same place that Dickinson is but with Trae and Cameron Steckler returning entering their upperclassmen years expectations are higher.
In-Between: Legacy, St. Marys, Bismarck
Bismarck lost so many seniors including Connor Hellebust but they played a lot without him last year so there were guys that got experience in his absence. Legacy is now on an even playing field with others in terms of age and experience but we still feel they are one year away. St. Mary’s has a real standout in Cole Gendreau but lost the other top three scorers. With Cole playing they are not rebuilding but they have an uphill climb.
Rebuilding: Williston, Turtle Mountain, Jamestown
Williston struggled and lost an all state player. Jamestown was about average but lost their entire rotation from a year ago. Turtle Mountain brings back their entire rotation but they only won four games a year ago so it’s tough to move them into a new category until they put some wins together.
