Continue ReadingThe coming high school season is almost upon us. With that, we are taking a look at each Sectional in the state. Starting with 64 and ending with 1. Today, we are previewing Sectional 50 at Tri-County.
Teams: North White, Tri-County, South Newton, Pioneer, Covenant Christian (DeMotte), Caston, West Central
Last Year: This past season, this Sectional was very, very good. South Newton was able to squeak through Sectionals and then knock off Fort Wayne Blackhawk in the first round of Regionals before losing to Gary 21st Century. South Newton had 24 wins on the season, more wins than they had in the last five seasons combined. They did that in a Sectional that had three other teams, North White, Tri-County, and Pioneer, that had 17 wins or more. It was a really competitive group
Contenders For 2016-17: A lot of the reason for success overall for the Sectional last year was due to most of the best groups being very senior-laden. South Newton graduated seven seniors and only 13.5 points per game are returning. Pioneer is very similar but they do return their second and third leading scorers as well as freshman Jack Kiser who had 6.4 points and 5.3 rebounds per game in 2015-16. They look like the best returning group as it stands. Tri-County and North White are depleated as well. However, expect Covenant Christian to be a team that can compete for that top spot. They went 10-14 last year and now have a good group of seniors and juniors in charge in a Sectional that seems like it isn’t going to be near as good as it was a year ago.
Player To Watch: If Covenant Christian is going to take over this Sectional in the coming year, they are going to need their best player to step up and junior Chris Beezhold could be that guy. The 6’6 post player averaged 13.2 points and 9.5 rebounds last season in a very competitive year. That is likely to go up. Like we have said in these 1A previews before, if you have a good post player with legit size, that can take you a long way.
