Teams: Forest Park, Evansville Mater Dei, South Spencer, North Posey, Tell City, Perry Central
Last Year: Last season, the Evansville area was on the upswing with plenty of teams having their best seasons in a while including a big State run by Evansville Bosse. Even the smaller programs like South Spencer and Forest Park were up there. Those two programs met in the Sectional Championship and it was South Spencer taking home the trophy. They fell early against Providence in Regionals but finished the season with a 17-9 record.
Contenders For 2016-17: In the upcoming season, look for some changes a top this Sectional. South Spencer loses six seniors from last season but returns two of their top five scorers in Matthew Embry and Dylan Kelly. However, their head coach has also moved on to Seymour. However, their Sectional Championship counterpart could reload a bit easier. They lose quite a few guys as well but their underclassmen have size and scoring ability. They have a little bit more depth. Evansville Mater Dei struggled through part of the season with a pivitol four-game losing streak right after the new year. They lose sharpshooter Devan Straub but they bring back a lot and size. The trio of Ethan Dale (6’4), Sam Fulton (6’6), and Logan Carter (6’9) will make this one of the taller teams in the state, let alone 2A. They are the favorite heading into the season.
Player To Watch: Two guys standout as possible players to watch this upcoming season. Braeden Beard of Tell City and Sam Fulton of Evansville Mater Dei are the guys. Beard is a 6’4 sophomore that will be the best returning scorer for Tell City last year. He had 12.1 points, 9.0 rebounds, and 1.2 assists in his first varsity season. Fulton is one of the more efficient players in the southern part of the state and he does most of his work right at the rim. His consistency from game to game will be key as he had a lot of games where he would score four points and then had breakout games of 31, 18, and 17 points.
