SubscribeMark Smith is a dual sport star from Edwardsville that could play either basketball or baseball at the D1 level. After his decommitment from Missouri for baseball in July his basketball recruitment has continued to soar. The physical 6’4” point guard is a power guard that knows how to use that strength to get in the lane where he finishes at the hoop through contact. Compliments that well with a quality jumper from both mid-range and three. Outstanding rebounder from the lead guard position and has a feel for the game as a point guard. He is one of the highest rated uncommitted prospects in the state. We caught up with Smith to get an update on where his recruitment stands.
“Things are going good right now. I think I might be trying to make a decision before basketball season starts.”
Smith has taken official visits to a trio of schools.
“Northern Illinois, Wright State, and SIUE.”
What stood out about Northern Illinois on the visit?
“The coaches are good people and the players are cool to be around. I built a bond with some of the freshman.”
The Edwardsville guard spoke about Wright State.
“Wright State I like the coaches and players. It’s in a good area. I like also how it’s not too far from home.”
One school that is definitely not far is SIU-Edwardsville.
“I liked SIUE. It was cool. It’s close to home and I know some of the players because they are from my hometown.”
Smith tells us he doesn’t have any other visits planned at this time. What will be some factors he looks at to separate these three?
“Playing time is one factor and liking the coaches and the players. And a place I can develop at the most.”
He ran with the Southwest Jets on the grassroots circuit. Smith is the #20 prospect in the senior class and #8 overall point guard.
