The rising star can create his own shot, get to the rim and finish over the defense, and has a consistent jump shot from deep. He got some good minutes on varsity as a freshman at Bishop Dwenger High School in Fort Wayne. Smithey ran with Spiece Indy Heat 15U EYBL this summer and saw his recruiting ramp up as his individual work began to show in games. Hayden is set for a solid season and will see his recruiting continue to pick up.
Smithey saw some progress in his recruiting this summer as his play began to turn heads. He currently has interest from Central Michigan University, Toledo University, and Army. He has been attending camps at other regional universities and colleges to increase his exposure.
This is what Smithey had to say about his upcoming sophomore year, “It’s looking to be a big season with a big role for me. We have a great team with great team chemistry and I’m excited to get out there to show what I’ve done to get better.” Smithey will most likely be named a starter this season and will see most of his minutes as a SF/PF with Bishop Dwenger. “I expect big and successful things with this team full of talent.” Smithey also excels in the classroom posting a 4.17 GPA.
Hayden has attended the Scouts Focus Elite 80 Camp, Phenom 80, our own Prep Hoops IN Top 250 Expo, as well as In The Gym Hoops Elite Showcase and is currently playing in the Metro Indy League. These events have allowed him to showcase his skills against good talent and show that he can play at a very high level.
Smithey has been working on his own on his game. “I’m working on my defense, strength, quickness, and athleticism in general to get to that next level.” Playing on the EYBL circuit this summer exposed him to a high level of basketball and he matches that level of play. He knows that through improving his strength, quickness, and athleticism he will see progress in his handle and aggressiveness.
Bishop Dwenger will have a tough start to their season as 12 of their first 15 games in the 2016 – 2107 season are away games. Smithey is looking to step up as an underclassmen leader and help Bishop Dwenger make a long postseason run. Bishop Dwenger is looking to be competitive this season in the loaded Summit Athletic Conference (SAC).
As Hayden continues to grow and develop his game, he will begin to show that he is a top wing in the Class of 2019 in Indiana. He has a high potential and is putting in the work to make sure that he maximizes it. Be on the lookout for Smithey during his sophomore season.
