The Favorites
Mason Archambault of RC Stevens. When we’ve asked publicly and privately in South Dakota most players in the state feel Mason is the state’s best player. He certainly has the success with a couple nice rums in the state tournament and excellent shooting numbers.
Matt Cartwright of SF O’Gorman. Considered the state’s college prospect and that’s been backed up by his offer and acceptance of a scholarship to the defending national champion Augustana squad. Cartwright hit above 40 percent at the arc last year scoring a dozen a game and now a big year is expected.
Top Contenders
Tayton Vincent of Sioux Valley. Based on what we saw in July the other Augustana commit has a chance to put himself in the category with the favorites. Tayton has been a known name for years but injuries were a setback. Now he’s healthy and big things are expected for his final year.
Jack Talley of SF Washington. Physically he’s one of the state’s most gifted players and with Sam Siganos now playing at the college level Jack has a chance to show the state what he can do as a guy that will be depended on for big number production. If he plays as expected he’ll be in the running.
Ethan Freidel of Tea Area. Ethan is a gutsy big shot taker, one of the state’s elite shooters, and the leader of a Tea group that has a load of young talent. If Tea Area can be in the running for the state crown come March than it will be near a certainty that Ethan will be in the running for the top individual award.
Potential Contenders
Isaac Kortemeyer/Jake Satter of St. Thomas More. Why are they together? Well, they’ve been linked with basketball for so long it made sense to put them on here together because if the Cavs make another run or bring home the crown they will be up for awards. They, and maybe another teammate, may steal votes from each other but they won’t mind because they want a title.
Cooper Williams of Vermillion. Cooper is one of the smartest, steadiest, and longest running contributors there is in the state. Again, if it comes down to finally getting Vermillion where they want to be in March, expect Cooper to get some strong recognition.
Hyland Heinz of Huron. You want to have a conversation about toughness and elite shooting? Huron’s guard is in that conversation. All state player that has led his team to a load of wins with solid day by day numbers,
Dejay Fyskstra of SF Christian. The top player back from last year’s outstanding squad Dejay is now the leader. SF Christian will be good once again, but if they are near as good as last year his name will be mentioned in this column all year long.
Tyler Rozell of Warner. A third team Class B all state player last year who played his role brilliantly on Warner’s way to a state title. Now he is the leader and if Warner makes another role he will be in position to be talked about for the award.
Justice Morrison of White River. Justice did some of everything for his team last year scoring 12 points, grabbing four boards, dishing out three assists, and being one of the state’s leaders in steals. White River has high expectations in Class B and Morrison is leading the way.
