When the 6’3″ Heidenwith isn’t getting buckets for the basketball team, he is playing quarterback for the football team and making plays for the school’s baseball team. He already has an offer from Hannibal-Lagrange for baseball. Like most athletes, his favorite sport is whatever season is going on.
“I enjoy playing all three sports,” Heidenwith said. “Whatever sport I’m playing at the time is my favorite.”
When it comes to playing a sport at the collegiate level, Heidenwith would like to play basketball. The talented guard has received interest from a number of NAIA and Division III schools with a couple of Division II schools in the mix. One school of note is Doane College (Neb) which he said has been showing him the most attention.
Heidenwith was quite the stat-sheet stuffer as a junior at Putnam County. He played a number of roles for a young team that finished with a 13-12 record. He averaged 19.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 3.9 assists. He earned All-Conference and All-District honors for his efforts. As he enters his senior year, he is in striking distance of becoming the school’s career scoring leader.
“One of my goals is to get the school record,” Heidenwith said. “I’m about 400 points away, so that’s doable. Our school has been to a district championship in six or seven years. That is a big goal of mine. We want to win a district championship. We were a young team last year, so we have almost everybody back.”
Heidenwith projects to be a shooting guard at the college level, but he is capable of playing point guard, which he does for his high school team. He is an excellent 3-point shooter, but he can also get buckets on the drive and in transition. Heidenwith can also deliver pinpoint passes to open teammates.
“I’m more of an outside shooter, but I’ve been really working on my mid-range game,” he said. “In order to take my game to the next level, I think I need to work on my middle game.”
