The middle tier of big men, the guys that will be in that mid-major to DII range, they aren’t too plentiful so that puts a lot of emphasis on the under-the-radar prospects to step up this winter and for colleges to find “their” guys, guys that fit their style of play.
One such player that is likely to get a lot of consideration starting this winter is Homestead (IN) big man Brandon Durnell. The 6’6 center is coming off a solid season of AAU and now working on some visits this fall. To date, he has been to Judson University, IU-South Bend, Wheeling Jesuit, Fairmont State, and Davenport. He already has an IU-South Bend offer and should be close on a few others.
Durnell isn’t a big man that is going to have a lot of upside but more a role player with a big frame and some mobility in the post. He’s got a great frame and one that is going to add in some strength once he gets into a college weight room. At the NAIA and DIII level, he fits really well because he’s not going to stretch the floor but rather play in the mid-range and use his body to more of it’s potential.
He doesn’t stray away from his game too much which, in this day and age is a really good thing to have. He’s consistent and that is valuable. Last year for Homestead, he averaged 12.8 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 1.3 assists per game. He had a couple big games including 22 points and 6 rebounds against Zionsville. He only took 40 three-pointers on the season and made 45% of them. He’s 57% from the field overall. Brandon is also a 3.0 student and is looking into Communications as a possible major in college.
Again, post players are oddly going to be tough to come by but there are a ton of guys in this 2017 class that have the chance to step up this winter for their high school teams and play themselves into spots. Durnell is one of those guys and he seems to be on the radar of quite a few non-DI programs already.
