There are a number of transfers who will make a big impact and potentially change the landscape of basketball around the state. Here is a look at some of the impact transfers in the Show-Me State.
Carte’are Gordon 6’8″ Webster Groves ’18 (old school: Vianney): The prime-time power forward left Vianney in January of last season and will become eligible at Webster Groves in late January. He averaged 19 points and 12 rebounds for the Golden Griffins before leaving school. His presence in addition to a talented returning cast makes the Statesmen one of the favorites for the Class 5 state title.
Deontei Johnson 6’3″ Willard ’17 (old school: Springfield Central): The athletic wing player missed his junior season with a knee injury, but he rebounded with a strong summer with the Missouri Gym Rats. He is now at Willard where he is probably the biggest impact transfer in the Southwest part of the state.
Dominique Hardimon 6’3″ Poplar Bluff ’19 (old school: South Pemiscot): A talented combo forward, Hardimon averaged 16 points and eight rebounds for South Pem as a freshman. A high-motor competitor, Hardimon will join a talented Poplar Bluff team that returns 20-point scorers Marcedus Leech and Willie Lucas.
Liam Courtney 6’11” Chaminade ’18: The skilled big comes to Chaminade from Canada. Courtney is a versatile post player with the ability to score in the paint or step outside and make jumpers and put the ball on the floor. He could become a big piece as the Red Devils attempt to defend their Class 5 state championship.
Saadique Perkins 6’3″ Park Hill South ’18 (old school: Sumner Academy, KS): The talented junior guard comes to Park Hill South from the Kansas side, where he was one of the top guards in his class. Perkins is a talented scorer and ball handler who will join Park Hill South’s dynamic sophomore set of guards in Lamel Robinson and Desi Williams.
Dominic Mitchell 6’3″ St. Mary’s ’18 (old school: MICDS): An versatile all-purpose performer, Mitchell averaged 13 points, five rebounds and two assists a game as a sophomore at MICDS. He joins a loaded St. Mary’s team that won 21 games and played for a district title a year ago. With his addition, the Dragons will be a contender in Class 4.
Brooks Ford 6’2″ DeSmet ’18 (old school: Stillwater, OK): Brooks is the son of Travis Ford, who is the new men’s basketball coach at Saint Louis University. The sharpshooting guard was the leading scorer at Stillwater High in Oklahoma while his father was the coach at Oklahoma State. Ford should fit in perfectly with the 3-point shooting system of new head coach Blake Ahearn.
Isaiah Ford 6’4″ Webster Groves ’17 (old school: Affton): The multi-skilled Ford is a huge pickup for the Statesmen, who should challenge for the Class 5 state title. As a junior at Affton, Ford averaged 24 points, seven rebounds and three assists a game. He is a tremendous scorer who can handle the ball and pass.
Ryan Warren-Hogue 5’8″ Northwest Academy ’17 (old school: McCluer): The lightning quick point guard comes to Northwest after being a three-year starter at McCluer. As a junior, Warren-Hogue averaged 16 points a game. He is an excellent 3-point shooter who can penetrate. He makes the Hornets a big factor in Class 3.
Trae Meny 6’5″ Battle ’18 (old school: Palmyra): Trae comes to Battle with his father, Brian Meny, who was named the new boys basketball coach. Meny was an All Clarence Cannon Conference performer at Palmyra, where he averaged 15 points a game. He will bring size and excellent 3-point shooting to Battle’s offensive attack.
Zach Bush 6’1″ Ladue ’17 (old school: University City): An excellent pass-first point guard who averaged 11 points and seven assists a game in helping University City to an appearance in a Class 4 district championship game. He is exactly what Ladue needs, which returns a top shooter in Tate Hotz and talented big in River Rhoads.
Kyle Younge 5’10” Jennings ’18 (old school: Riverview Gardens): An excellent point guard who will make a big impact on a Jennings team that is retooling after a 21-5 season. Younge averaged 9.7 points and shot 44 percent from 3-point range as a sophomore at Riverview Gardens.
Kyle Noah 6’4″ DuBourg ’18 (old school: Riverview Gardens): The athletic forward will be one of the top players in the Archdiocesan Athletic Association at his new school DuBourg. He will become a nice building block for first-year coach Ladon Champagne.
Jhaylen Covington-Berry 6’2″ Hazelwood Central ’18 (old school: St. Mary’s): A talented combo guard who hasn’t played a lot of varsity minutes in his two years, but has made tremendous strides during the summer. He will be an excellent addition to a Hawks team that is rebuilding around a talented young nucleus after two consecutive 25-win seasons.
