A skilled 6-foot-3, 205-pound forward, Abbasi was in Nixa last weekend to show his skills at Rob Yanders’ annual Basketball Movement at Fox Hollow Fieldhouse. A self-described undersized big man, Abbasi has a soft touch and good footwork and can also play on the perimeter, pulling opposing big men away from the basket.
“I think I can stretch the floor out if our guards can get to the basket and I think I can be good in a system like that,” Abbasi said.
Abbasi said following the event that he hopes to use the experience to help a young Fordland team grow on the court this season.
“I think this weekend has been great,” Abbasi said. “I have been working with the big men here and you don’t find big men this skilled or this big every day. This will definitely help me get ready and make everything else feel easy. I think it is going to be a great help for me this season.
“The competition has been great here, this is probably the one of the best camps I have been to competition-wise. Coaching-wise is top notch, you’re not going to find a camp with better coaches than this. It has been a great weekend all-around.”
Abbasi said he spent the offseason focused on improving his speed, agility, running, jumping and overall athleticism. He says Fordland has a chance to be much improved after finishing one game above .500 last season.
“We’re really optimistic about the season,” he says. “We lose one senior from last year and are bringing everyone else back. We had a great offseason and if we can stay healthy, we had a few injuries last season … we are looking to have a great year and have been working hard and putting in the work.”
