The thing that really is impressive is maybe his demeanor. The now 6’1 point guard from McCutcheon is one of the players that has stood out the most to me in the last few years.
He had a game as a freshman against Logansport where he came in cold, off the bench, to start and finish the second half after his team was down. The senior guards weren’t getting it done and head coach Rick Peckinpaugh needed to make a change. Enter in, Phinisee. He played like a veteran from the second he stepped on the floor and he played defense and created offense, exactly what you want a point guard to do.
When you think about his demeanor and how he reacts to the game, then add in all the other aspects that standout like his crazy length, newfound height, and improved shooting stroke, Rob is in the development of becoming a high end player. That is why it isn’t a big surprise that a program like Virginia came in and gave him an offer this week.
The Cavaliers join Butler, Indiana, and Purdue as the programs that have extended an offer to the 2018 point guard. He’s not likely to get any low major or even mid-major offers because frankly, he’s proven himself as one of the best players in the state and he deserves the offers he has.
We got a chance to watch him in open gym this past week and he is noticeably taller. He stands at least 6’1 now and a little more filled out. That is trouble for opposing teams as he was already tough defensively when he was 5’11 last winter. Now, he’s a little taller and a little longer and that looks like it is going to translate to a breakout season because for as good as Phinisee is, he isn’t a household name yet in the state. However, McCutcheon looks to repeat their performance from last season with guys like Phinisee and Haden Deaton and Eddy Collins. But, Robert will be on the ball, in the first game of the season, and you should expect big things.
