Guys Who Can Make Shots But No Shooters
The thing that stood out the most about Carmel’s open gym was that they have a lot of guys that are plenty capable of making jumpers from beyond the three-point line but he doesn’t have that typical shooter he has had in the past. Last year, to a lesser extent, Preston Flamion and Garrett Covington gave them that option. Before that it was Ryne Cline. Before that it was Michael Volovic with the clutch gene. Now, it will be up to whoever steps up. Cole Jenkins and Sterling Brown seem like the likeliest candidates but P.J. Baron and Luke Heady could be threats as well. Honestly, combined this team should still be a good perimeter shooting team but just don’t know if they have that guy yet who you draw the play up for.
Carmel Should Be Tough In The Paint
Last year, for the first time I remember, Heady played a freshman on Varsity. John-Michael Mulloy got some minutes and now he could be the starter at the 5 for this group as he has the most upside and the biggest height advantage. Mulloy looked better in the post, stronger and full of energy to take on his teammates. Those teammates will be the real difference this season because they have real size and weight in the paint. Mike Pitz and Brit Beery will be there to add some toughness. They should be able to rotate these guys, possibly play them together in certain situations and that will be really difficult for teams to match up with.
Brown’s Team Now
In a lot of ways, this was Sterling Brown’s team last year. But, in reality, Flamion and Covington were the two big outgoing seniors and had their stretches. Now, this is the senior guards group. He has a pretty good year with Spiece Indy Heat, playing at the highest level and finding out that he could hang with those guys. Now, he comes back and looks stronger and a little more composed in the workout. He’s going to be the leader of this group and in turn, it might mean he will have to step up in scoring as well. We talked about his jumper earlier and it does look better. He has shown improved consistency and he’ll need it. Big year for Carmel with Brown taking the reigns.
