“Brian Jones and his entire staff from North Dakota along with Joe Callero of Cal Poly were at Keondre’s workout on Monday,” said father Chris Schumacher.
Coach Schumacher is himself a college coach, doubling as a parent in this particular recruitment. While Coach Schumacher coaches track at an elite level, he is more than familiar with the transition from high school to college.
Keondre is nearing that transition.
“Afterwards, my wife and I spent some good time with North Dakota staff,” said Coach Schumacher. “Coach Callero visited us at home that evening. We are going to North Dakota this weekend for official visit.”
North Dakota Head Coach Brian Jones is entering his tenth season, an astronomically stable situation for a D1 program. With one exception the Fighting Hawks have hovered around .500 since 2010. Speaking of transitions, they were surprisingly consistent considering the recently conquered the chasm between D1 and D2 basketball with merely a hiccup.
Keondre is not committed anywhere yet, so here are the other options.
“(We) have officials lined up for Fort Wayne (next week) and Cal Poly (in three weeks),” said Coach Schumacher. “Fort Wayne head coach, Jon Coffman coming to tomorrow’s workout and (will) speak to my wife and I after.”
The Fort Wayne Mastadons are surprisingly light on Indiana-born players. In fact, the roster only boasts four Hoosiers. If Schumacher elects to attend the Fort Wayne University he would slide into a duel for playing time with current freshman Chris Rollins (MI).
Cal Poly is the geographical outlier. They have been actively recruiting Schumacher for a long time though. Residents of the Big West Conference, the Mustangs really want a PG in the 2017 class. Keondre would be living very, very far from home, but have a true fresh start.
D2 schools like Lewis University (IL) and UMSL (MO) have also offered.
