The 5’10” Collins is a pass-first point guard in every sense of the word. His court vision of ability to deliver the basketball is what makes him one of the state’s top point guards in the 2019 class. He relishes his role as a facilitator.
“I really don’t have a problem with not scoring too much,” Collins said. “I’ve always been a passer first. I just see the court real well and I love to share the basketball. If a teammate is open, I will give him the ball. I’m happy if my team scores.”
Collins stepped into the lineup immediately as a freshman at St. Mary’s as coach Kelvin Lee gave him the ball from Day 1. Collins averaged 8.6 points and handed out an impressive 208 assists, which was good for 7.8 a game, in helping the Dragons to a 21-8 record and a the championship of the Archdiocesan Athletic Association. St. Mary’s was also a Class 4 district finalist, losing to eventual state champion Vashon. The Dragons were loaded with underclassmen last season and most of them return as they look to become one of the state’s top Class 4 contenders.
“Our goals are to win the conference again,” Collins said. “We also want to win districts and compete for a state championship.”
Collins spent the past summer playing with the St. Louis Eagles 15U team. He made a big impact with his passing and playmaking, but he also displayed his ability to get to the basket off the dribble. At this stage of his career, he is a bigger scoring threat off dribble penetration than he is from the perimeter.
“I know I have to work on my jump shot,” Collins said. “In order to be a better point guard, I know that I have to improve my shooting.”
