The 6’5″ swingman enjoyed an excellent summer with the South Central Fury 17U team that won a couple of tournaments in St. Louis in July, including the Threat Hoops Warm Up at the beginning of the month.
Not only does Coatney have good size for a perimeter player, but he has a strong body and the skills to play anywhere on the court. He can score and get things done on the wing, but he is also quite comfortable playing point guard. He is an excellent passer who makes his teammates better.
“Point guard has always been my natural position,” Coatney said. “I really enjoy passing the ball. My strengths are my court vision and my ability to finish at the rim. My size helps me a lot because it creates mismatches for me.”
At the end of the summer, Coatney has started to receive some collegiate interest from a number of Division III and NAIA schools. Among the schools who are looking at him are Missouri Baptist, Evangel and Webster University.
As a junior, Coatney helped lead the Eagles to a 20-9 record and a berth in a Class 3, district championship game. Coatney will return as a senior in hopes of taking his team one step further to win a district title.
“We’re hoping to do better next season,” Coatney said. “I’ve been working to become a better shooter. I also want to get more athletic and improve my quickness before my senior season.”
