Hunter Strait Setting Visits
Point guards have to scratch and claw for everything they get. As the shortest position on the recruiting circuit, there are just more human beings competing for the same amount of scholarships. Centers don’t have that problem.
One exceptional point guard in the Class of 2018, Hunter Strait, is setting up some unofficial visits for this fall. He camped and performed well in July. Still, he is hunting the recognition his game deserves.
Hunter Strait is shoving his name and his game into the faces of hesitant recruiters. Nobody else will do it for him.
and like they said they really like me because the game they watched… which Penn and North Dakota were at too…
“I had 23 points, eight or nine assists against Chandler Lawson’s Team Penny team, where Chandler was guarding me half the time and I was blowing past him and hitting shots on him,” recalled Strait. “And after the game all three coaches were like, ‘We are really interested. We are going to keep the relationship going and we are making you a priority and stuff like that.'”
Hunter’s Arrow
For a couple years Strait’s skills and work ethic have impressed on the camp circuit. He shone brightly in 2014 with Crossroads Invitational (Indiana).
Slick handles, mature passes, and a feathery jumper coalesce to make Strait a high-major point guard. He can score on anybody in Iowa.
For now Strait’s focus is developing.
“Just training and getting ready for season,” shared Strait. “(I am going to be setting up visits for fall and stuff here soon.”
Where will Hunter go?
Potential Hosts
He has interest from Drake, North Dakota, and a couple Ivy League schools.
“But I was thinking for sure I’m going to be going to Depaul,” said Strait. “I was talking with their coaches at the elite camp and Coach (Rick) Carter, the head assistant, and I had a great talk towards the end of the camp. And he told me that he sees me as a High Major D1 player, and told me I’m going to get overlooked and just to stay patient and don’t get frustrated and enjoy the process.”
DePaul has fought for relevance for years in a major media market, but sub-standard facilities. Now, they are investing in a downtown arena. It could revolutionize the program.
The Blue Demons have a shooting guard verbal commitment (John Diener) representing the 2018 class. The 2017 class might introduce a a star in Justin Roberts. Roberts might sign in November, but there is a reason verbal commitments are verbal and not binding.
Camping with success and visiting campuses is not enough. Strait is determined. He is all-in.
